The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

Help them actually understand the material, not just get the right answer that one time. Keep their confidence up so they don't start believing they're just bad at the subject. And honestly, work myself out of a job a little, teach them habits they can use on their own instead of making them rely on you. I'm patient, I'll explain something three…

For me, the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to breakdown a concept which the student finds challenging into its key components and then explain them in a way which really resonates with a student. By doing this not only are you helping the student to understand the topic, you are enabling to student to apply the idea or concept to…

1. Make sure they have the encouragement they need. 2. The most important thing is to explain to them why they should take these studies and how it will help them in their future endeavors. 3. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the student beyond just their academic strengths and weaknesses. Every student learns differently, and building a positive relationship allows a tutor to identify what motivates them and what support they need. When students feel comfortable, they are more willing to ask questions,…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Giving them a vivid imagination can be a…

A tutor's role goes beyond teaching academic content. Creating a positive learning environment, adapting to diverse learning styles, and offering clear explanations are crucial. In my opinion, the first thing a tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of tutoring is to…

Anthony, Balwyn North

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
