What do I enjoy most about tutoring? π
I enjoy being able to mentor the next generation of young creative people who will be at the forefront of new discoveries and amazing problem solving. I hope to work with youth in a counselling setting in the future so tutoring has been preparing me well for this endeavour. I feel a great sense of achievement being able to be a role model to young kids and feel great pride in seeing the happiness on a students face once they have finally grasped a difficult concept.
My Strengths as Tutor πͺ
I find it easy to communicate and relate to young people thanks to having young siblings and cousins who I have tutored through primary and high school. I have always gravitated towards roles where I can work with young people as not only can I teach them, but they can also teach me many things. I loved science and math throughout primary and high school and completed a Bachelor of Science at Monash University to hone in on that passion. I want to be able to pass that passion onto the next generation.
Most important things I can do for a student π
The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults. They know their bodies and brains better than others so it is extremely important to stop and listen to them.

When asked what she wanted to cover in our sessions, Emma came up with the idea of doing a test every 2 weeks to try and help her be more comfortable in an exam environment. Emma listened really well and was happy to chat and have a joke throughout the session. She seemed comfortable to tell me what learning styles worked for her and what topics she wanted to cover in more detail. Created a βyellow rulerβ image to help remember that 100cm is in 1m not 10cm.
Multiplication of decimals. Volume. Fractions to percentages. Will be covered in the next session.
