A tutor should be able to read the students mind if he fails to do so he has failed in his job. Understanding what the student needs and give the student what the student lacks and preserve and enhance what the student already has, this is what tutoring is all about. I like to employ new methods of teaching skills as per the student requirements…

In my experience, I have found communication is key in motivating a student to learn and grow. As a tutor, I have found that my strength lies in my ability to connect with a student and earn his/her…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain how to solve problems in several different ways, particularly if a student is struggling to understand how to solve it the first time. These problem solving skills will help them in other areas as well, such as chemistry and physics. My main strength as a tutor…

To inspire them, to teach them, to help them and to be a role model. We can have fun during activities and do serious work when we should. It is through the Tutor that the student will probably choose his field for his career, so the Tutor has to be really encouraging. My strength would be the ability to connect to the students, by building a…

The tutor's aim should be to develop cognitive, analytical and imaginative capabilities so that the student learns how to think and face challenges. A tutor can help forming the most fundamental and strong knowledge base of the student, by guiding him/her rightly. That knowledge base is a foundation of major learning concepts in future. A tutor doesn't only literate the student, but plays a major role in educating one. I can explain a concept to the student in the simplest terms. My friendly…

Patience. Once we know something, it's easy to forget how we actually learnt that content. Therefore, it's important to always be persistent with someone's learning, and to never just keep using the same method then give up. Another aspect is structure. If you give students an expectation and guidance in what they need to do, it's more…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while helping them truly understand the material. A good tutor should create a supportive environment, adapt to each student's learning style, encourage questions, and inspire independent thinking so students can succeed both academically and beyond the classroom. My…

To really understand where the student is coming from. The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are to cultivate a deep understanding of the subject matter and to inspire a love for learning. This involves going beyond simply solving problems or answering questions, but rather, helping students develop critical thinking skills and a genuine interest in the topic.…

In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

Helping them grow, both academically and in extracurricular aspects. Anthony, Balwyn North

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
