One of the most important things a tutor can do is focus on the areas that the student is struggling in and create a learning format that best allows the student to increase understanding in those areas and achieve the best mark possible. As a current university student of engineering and physics, I have a good level of understanding of STEM…

A tutor should be able to build upon the basics and the foundation of a subject, most exams require an application of the basics. Students can only achieve full marks if they can apply their core knowledge in different ways to suit a question. Hence, the most important thing a tutor can do is teach ways to apply the basics. In math, there are…

Approachability, as well as showing genuine passion allows for a tutor to truly reach out in a meaningful manner to their student. I believe this allows for accessible delivery of content to the student in a manner which allows them to intimately understand the subject material. With little under 2 years of experience tutoring high school…

Improve their skills and confidence in the subject they are struggling/interested in. Also, being encouraging and empathetic is important, not only for their learning but to be a role model too. I know the importance of explaining to a student how to understand the question instead of just getting the right answer. I am a great listener and am…

Local Reviews

My daughter Jasmine has been tutored by Thomas Ban in maths for the past few years. She recently was accepted into the gifted and talented class for year 7 at Stella Maris and also received an "Outstanding" grade (highest grade possible) for Maths this year. We just wanted to thank Thomas Ban for the wonderful work he has done with Jasmine this year. We feel that she has received these grades due to Thomas tutoring. He has challenged and pushed her to work harder and improve her maths. He is also extremely professional and courteous.

Inside JewellsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tiffany completed a diagnostic assessment covering key Year 9 maths topics to identify areas needing support, focusing on algebra and geometry questions.

In Year 10, Alex worked on the quadratic formula and practiced completing the square to solve quadratic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised calculus concepts, tackled function transformations, and reviewed trigonometry as part of his Preliminary HSC exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped writing down working when manipulating formulas or solving equations—"writing out steps & showing working—really need to focus on this one," a tutor observed.

This habit made it hard to spot where confusion with negative signs and brackets crept in, especially during linear algebra tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student preparing for tests struggled with time management: he ran out of time planning answers and didn't review his calculations, which meant careless entry errors lingered through topic tests.

For a Year 4 learner tackling times tables, gaps in recall slowed progress with division word problems; numbers beyond the thousands became confusing when place value wasn't written clearly.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Jewells noticed that a Year 10 student who used to skip steps in algebra is now writing out every stage and double-checking his work, which has led to far fewer small mistakes and stronger problem-solving.

In Year 11 maths, another student made a breakthrough with multi-step financial maths questions—she now confidently interprets complex problems and accurately plugs the right numbers into equations without help.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who was hesitant at first started asking for clarification instead of guessing, then managed to get two previously incorrect questions right by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Windale Library, bilyabayi—or at your child's school (with permission), like Jewells Primary School.
