It is important to be patient and approachable so that students feel comfortable coming to you with their queries. Availability and dependability is also important. If a student has last minute issues the night before their exam it is important that they can rely on their tutor to get back to them by the end of the day with an answer. I am patient…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. Understanding the most effective way of learning for each student is also crucial. When I was…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

My philosophy as a tutor revolves around three fundamental principles: patience, care, and clarity. Patience is at the heart of my teaching approach. I believe that learning isn't about rushing through content, but about facilitating comprehension at each student's pace. My mission goes beyond delivering lectures - I am committed to ensuring…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

Definitely to be patient and to never assume knowledge as known or simple. Further to focus on not just content, but also mark schemes for maximum success. I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aiden tackled solving algebraic expressions through factorisation and practiced simplifying equations by working backwards.

Year 10 student Olivia focused on understanding Pythagoras' theorem and applied it to distance problems on the Cartesian plane, then moved on to trigonometry homework, learning when to use sine, cosine, or tangent in real-world contexts.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan worked on adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators, as well as applying these skills to worded fraction problems for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student frequently avoided writing out algebraic steps when solving equations, leading to repeated sign errors—"he just wrote the answer, skipping how he got there," a tutor noted.

A Year 11 physics student often forgot to bring necessary materials, like textbooks and notes, which slowed progress on graphing tasks and forced reliance on memory instead of review.

In Year 5 English, messy written work and inconsistent backchecking meant spelling mistakes persisted in stories even after feedback.

For senior biology (Year 12), incomplete notes during revision made recalling enzyme names under test conditions much harder.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking questions now talks through tricky algebra problems out loud, even when stuck—something he hesitated to do before.

In senior biology, one high schooler managed to complete a practice test on DNA replication and polypeptide synthesis with noticeably fewer errors than in earlier sessions, showing she's retaining more detail each week.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously struggled with mixed and improper fractions has begun remembering to multiply independently at the right step without reminders, finishing her homework with only self-checked corrections.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Boys' Preparatory School.
