To equip students with the knowledge and the tools to handle not just the problems that are in front right now, but similar challenges too outside of tutoring sessions. I relate to students really well and create a comfortable learning environment for them where they don't feel judged or shame for not understanding…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is create an open and comfortable environment for their students. I believe that if a student isn't afraid to make mistakes or ask questions, they can become more confident, approach problems independently, and find better enjoyment in doing the work that they might originally find dull and tedious.…

Engagement is key while tutoring and it's essential to impart information in a fun and interactive way so that students feel like learning as well. Tutors give students a chance to clear their doubts and stay ahead in the subjects that they are pursuing. I think that I am great at making students feel comfortable and motivated to study. I make…

I believe having a tutor who presents work in a manageable and stepwise manner is key. many students are embarrassed to admit when they don't understand concepts they may think are simple, or are intimidated by the seeming difficulty of some of the work. Presenting the problems as manageable and breaking them down helps the student gain your trust…

I believe the most important thing a tutor brings is 1 to 1 guidance. A good tutor can work with the student and guide them to achieve their individual goals, and can adjust their methods and pace as necessary, unlike in a class at school where the pace of teaching is same for everyone. I have a strong grasp of the sciences and English, and I…

In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

There are two main things that a tutor should aim to provide for a student: 1. Confidence/Self esteem - Students can't learn if they feel bad about themselves or their ability to learn (learn maths specifically in this case) Any teacher of a student, needs to praise a students effort as being inherently valuable as well as praising any…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a supportive and encouraging learning environment. The most important thing a tutor can do is ensure that a student does not hate the subject they require tutoring in. I believe that it's crucial for a tutor to create an open and supportive relationship with their student. A student needs to feel comfortable to ask questions and communicate what they need, and it's the tutor's responsibility to create a space where that is possible. As an older sister (and informal tutor) to a 10-year-old little girl, I've…

Help them actually understand the material, not just get the right answer that one time. Keep their confidence up so they don't start believing they're just bad at the subject. And honestly, work myself out of a job a little, teach them habits they can use on their own instead of making them rely on you. I'm patient, I'll explain something three…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
