One of most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them build confidence in their own knowledge and abilities. Additionally, tutors can also provide students with tailored learning approaches to help them learn to the best of their ability and in ways that may not be possible in their classes at school. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to foster confidence in their students to independently learn and build confidence in their skills. A tutor should also be able to inspire curiosity so that students become better learners in their field and ask questions. Lastly, the tutor should be flexible to personalise the…

I believe connecting with the student and understanding what their specific learning style and needs are is one of the most important things. One size does not fit all, that's the reason they're getting tutored in the first place because the school setting is not enough. Getting along and figuring out what works for them is key. I can connect well…

I think being a tutor is especially important in the sense that they are capable of adapting to their students needs and the way they process information, able to come up with different strategies to help the student learn the topic is the way best suited for them. I also think a tutor should be able to help the student understand the topic at…

Based on my experience, I believe tutoring goes beyond the instructional role to supplement class-room teaching in three ways: Empathic: Face-to-face or personalized tutoring is intended to be remedial in nature. At times, the lack of understanding of some fundamental concepts from the prior years causes difficulty for the student. The tutor…

Improve their skills and confidence in the subject they are struggling/interested in. Also, being encouraging and empathetic is important, not only for their learning but to be a role model too. Support their learning and encourage them. For a student to have someone encouraging them is a boost in their self-confidence. I grew up with 4 younger siblings (the youngest is now 6), exposing me to how children are at different stages of life. How they learn and think, what motivates them. I also received a band 6 in HSC advanced mathematics,…

Inside Kotara SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Julian reviewed faces, edges, and vertices of 3D shapes using hands-on geometry questions and practised two-digit addition and subtraction before progressing to multi-digit number problems.

Year 8 student Aiden focused on financial mathematics, tackling compound interest and depreciation in worded scenarios and converting time periods for calculations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zoe revised preliminary HSC maths with targeted practice on calculus concepts, functions, polynomials, and trigonometry to prepare for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student struggled with test time management and needed to be quizzed on what he knows for exams oncoming, as noted by the tutor.

During algebra practice in Year 8, another avoided writing out working, which made it hard to spot mistakes—really need to focus on this one.

A Year 4 learner found multi-digit numbers confusing when place value was missed; forgetting to update digits led to repeated errors.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, shallow formal responses meant feedback wasn't being fully acted on. This sometimes left gaps unaddressed before assessments arrived.

Recent Achievements

A Kotara South tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student's approach to financial maths: where he once hesitated, he now confidently works through multi-step questions and quickly spots compounding period changes without help.

In another high school session, a Year 9 student who previously struggled with worded probability questions is now breaking them down independently and has mastered the use of probability tables.

Meanwhile, a younger Year 3 learner moved from confusion to success by finally understanding key terminology in class discussions and correctly answering two questions that had stumped him just one week earlier.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Charlestown Library, walyamayi—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kotara South Public School.
