I think the most important thing a tutor can do is restore or establish the students self esteem and help them overcome the challenges they're facing. I think apart from being able to help the students academically, I am able to connect with the students and motivate them, hence encouraging them to depend on themselves to be able to progress…

- Motivation: As a a tutor I believe motivation is very important to a student's learning. You must be able to deliver your course in an enthusiastic way. - Ongoing assessment: It is very important to regularly determine a students strengths/weaknesses with a trial exam. This information can then be used to tutor the student accordingly in…

I believe the most important thing is to help and guide students through the HSC period, and their choices after the HSC. My strength would be that I can understand what the students feel because I have been enroled into many different tutoring centers. My weakness is that I am a quiet person and I don't talk a lot unless it is with close friends,…

It's significant that a tutor should teach their students all the important points and lessons in an understandable way, but at the same time, we have to raise our students' confidence and motivate them to study the lessons. I have enough patience to explain every aspect of what I'm teaching. Personally, I am a kind and considerate person so I try…

Other than the obvious reasons of being able to just regurgitate the content taught in schools in my opinion the most important things a tutor could do for a student is be compassionate for them and empathetic as tutoring is not like school as since they may go tutoring e.g. 1 time per week they need to learn more content than of which they do at…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and empathetic with them. Just being a support for the student in question. Now, obviously, the first idea to jump to there is academically, and this is super important, of course, but also school is a naturally difficult time for a lot of students for a large variety of reasons, and even if the tutor nor student realize it, being there to help dealing with it is a massive…

To not show them the answer straight away. Push the student to understand what they are doing, and use the knowledge that they have learnt to solve the problem. There is no point in getting a question wrong, looking at the answer and saying 'I will do that next time'. It is essential that they can do the questions individually and confidently. I…

The most important role a tutor can play is showing constant and unconditional support for their student. I believe showing this constant support allows the student to trust us as tutors and react more…

Believe in them. Self confidence is a important factor especially in children. If they are able to see that the tutor believes in their abilities then it teaches them to believe in themselves. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to respect their intellect. A tutor must always be careful not to break a student’s confidence. Sometimes, students may feel low for not being able to catch up to their friends. In such case, it is very important as a tutor to encourage the student and bring back his confidence. Childhood…

Inside LansvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Lily revised expansion, simplification, and factorisation of algebraic equations and practised solving quadratic equations from class work.

Year 11 student Ahmad focused on financial mathematics by tackling credit, borrowing scenarios, and earning money calculations.

For Year 12, Sam worked through HSC-style questions involving probability concepts and advanced coordinate geometry using exam paper revision tasks.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping written steps while using the quadratic formula led to confusion with negative signs—"he substituted too quickly and missed a minus."

For a Year 7 student, inconsistent homework completion meant formulas for volume and area weren't memorised; this caused hesitation during test revision.

Messy working in indices problems made error tracing difficult in senior years, especially under timed conditions.

During complex worded questions in Year 10, reliance on mental calculation rather than setting out logic clearly resulted in lost marks when revising past assessments.

These habits left students unsure where their errors crept in during independent practice.

Recent Achievements

One Lansvale tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who now confidently asks for clarification on tricky quadratic equations, rather than skipping problems as she did earlier in the term.

Another high schooler has moved from hesitating over financial maths questions to accurately calculating compound interest and using taxation tables without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student surprised her tutor by recognising which index laws applied in harder problems and applying them rapidly—just weeks ago, she would second-guess herself on even basic indices.

Last session, she solved the most challenging question on indices and volume entirely unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Whitlam Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lansvale East Public School.
