Make them feel at ease and completely supported, be gentle and caring and show incredibly strong belief in them. I know that children feel more courageous to take on new challenges if they feel someone has a lot of confidence in them. You have to really care about them and their results, so they know the help they are getting is genuine. I have…

Patience is vital for students of all ages and skill-levels. The best thing an english tutor can do for a student is be patient with them in order to accommodate their strengths alongside their weaknesses. Simply 'teaching' is not enough for a student given their tutor lacks patience for them. With many years as an instructor under my belt, my…

Inside LilyvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Thomas worked on double-digit multiplication and solving time word problems involving conversion between units.

For Year 9, Olivia focused on algebraic equations—practicing how to solve for x—and reviewed order of operations (BIDMAS) using example problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex completed work on Network Concepts and Critical Path Analysis, tackling both terminology and past HSC-style practice questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 maths, one student's tendency to "rush to an answer" on algebraic equations meant missed steps and accuracy issues, especially when negative numbers were involved.

In Year 8 English, a reluctance to follow a planning structure for essays led to "planning needs to be faster and more concise," but the plan itself was rarely used during writing.

A Year 6 student skipped parts of multi-digit subtraction when distracted by noise, leaving answers incomplete.

During HSC preparation in senior years, over-reliance on familiar revision questions left harder exam-style problems unpracticed—a gap noticed just weeks before trials.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Lilyvale noticed a big change with a Year 11 student who, after previously losing marks on exam questions, is now clearly recognising her mistakes and confidently correcting her approach.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to stay quiet when confused has started asking clarifying questions whenever something doesn't make sense, showing real initiative and self-awareness.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students finally gave long division a try instead of skipping it like before and managed to spot trends in her answers all by herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Helensburgh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Otford Public School.
