The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. Self-esteem can be extremely vulnerable during schooling years, and tutors have the power to enhance their students' level of self-confidence and sense of self-efficacy. When I believe in their potential, work with their strengths, support their…

Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. I would say my strengths are attributes such as patience with the student (repetition when necessary), determination in getting the message across, and a friendly attitude towards all…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do is to work with a student from a student's perspective. It is exactly the reason why group-studying is so effective as everyone is on the same wavelength. A tutor's job is to be able to "read" into the student's mind and solve-problems by comfortably adjusting and improvising…

Inside LugarnoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Harry practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages and reviewed Pythagoras' theorem and early algebra topics.

In Year 8, Jessica focused on solving linear equations and word problems as well as applying index laws using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled differentiation and integration questions for upcoming trial exams, with extra attention to calculus techniques through targeted practice problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student repeatedly relied on "test yourself" questions instead of tackling harder challenge problems in trigonometry, which limited exposure to unfamiliar scenarios—"decided to change from challenge questions as they were quite difficult."

In Year 7, a learner's maths book showed unclear working and messy layout, making it tough to spot where sign errors crept in.

At the senior level, one Year 12 student hesitated with integration and differentiation because he sometimes confused which method was needed; this led to wasted time reworking problems under exam pressure.

Missed opportunities for self-led revision also meant forgotten rules resurfaced during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A Lugarno tutor recently noticed a Year 12 student who'd been struggling with harder integration questions now working through them independently, often getting answers right without hints and even tackling new probability problems with more confidence than before.

In Year 10, another student who previously mixed up which operation to use in linear equations is now consistently choosing the correct method and solving for x accurately.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to guess when unsure has started raising their hand to ask for help as soon as they're stuck, leading to quicker understanding during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oatley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lugarno Public School.
