I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not every…

The most important thing that a tutor should do is teaching student how to study efficiently, instead of just give them questions to do and mentioning about the content. Try best to explain the content and help them to learn more. Try my best to arrange my time and planning my class, be patient to student to explain all contents and have a wide…

I think some of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is obviously, being able to lift their grades as well as instilling more self-confidence in them when tackling harder questions. Another more important thing is being able to act as a mentor to the student, and relay any important information that would be beneficial to…

I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. A tutor can be many things for a student. Not only can they be an avenue where they can learn in a different way which may be the student's way of learning, but also they can be a mentor for them in that they can give different insights and views, as well as being someone who listen, and if wanted, suggestions and advice. I can explain concepts…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is help them understand concepts that may seem impossible to them because they can then view learning in a completely different viewpoint. This helps them have an open mind towards learning instead of viewing it as something tedious. As such, being understanding and empathetic…

A tutor should provide guidance and assistance at all costs for the student they are teaching. It is the tutors responsibility to do the best they can in order to help the student reach their potential. A tutor should sometimes take a step further to care for the student and a lot of the times the student will reciprocate your effort to create a…

Try to help them gain a good, comprehensive understanding of concepts that they don't quite understand as at school, the teacher does not have time to individually help out every student. A tutor should provide a student a "light-bulb" moment, where they suddenly understand a concept, gain an idea or know how to answer a question. Light-bulb moments allow students to gain confidence in the subject, and thus achieve the goal of a higher mark. I believe it is also important for tutors to provide tips for dealing with stress,…

Inside Macquarie ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zara focused on place value and rounding to tens and hundreds, then practiced addition strategies for multi-digit numbers.

In Year 8, Daniel worked through surface area of cylinders, applying the formula in worded scenarios and reviewing volume calculations for a range of 3D shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily tackled trigonometric ratios with bearings and solved angles of elevation and depression questions using diagrams to visualise real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in algebra needed reminders to show working, especially when forming equations—needs to start independently form equation of question for which a revision test is scheduled for next class.

In Year 11, time management emerged as an obstacle during exam strategies; planning responses more efficiently was discussed after rushed answers cost marks.

For a Year 6 geometry assessment, "test score 18.5/40" reflected gaps in both content and exam confidence.

One Year 7 learner hesitated to attempt questions due to fear of mistakes, leading to less written practice and slower improvement each session.

Recent Achievements

A Macquarie Park tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now actively seeks help when stuck on trigonometry problems—this shift has led her to solve more complex questions independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who struggled with quadratic equations last term managed to work through several examples without errors and even identified areas he wanted extra practice in.

For a younger learner in Year 3, reading aloud became smoother; she now tackles unfamiliar words by sounding them out instead of skipping over them, finishing her first storybook without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumont Road Public School.
