The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is be reliable, knowledgable and help the student reach and exceed their expectations. To help prepare them to the best of both our abilities for exams as well as helping them understand concepts to help them succeed. My strengths are my experience and patience with students. I can adapt…

In the short term, it is important to help the student develop an understanding of the ideas behind a topic, rather than just knowing the content. Over the long term, helping the student form an effective study method of their own as well as developing good study habits will be critical to their later success. Aside from my experience and…

The most vital thing for a tutor is to assess the level of understanding of the student. Students learn in different ways (some learn best with visual explanations, some learn by analogy, or by pnemonic devices etc) and it is important to understand the best approach for a specific student. By applying the most appropriate teaching techniques for…

I think that communication and being on the same page (figuratively) as your student as very important. Younger people can often be hesitant to admit that they don't know something, so it is important to break down any barriers and understand the students needs. I am determined, patient, mature and motivated. I can try different methods of…

The most important things for a tutor is to be a source of support that they can reach out to, not only in the specific subject that they're tutoring, but also studying and school life in general. I'm skilled at breaking down larger, complex ideas and explaining small details and nuances but then being able to link it all back to over-arching…

I think as a tutor, the most important thing you can do for a student is help them acquire "tools" for their metaphorical toolbox. Each concept learnt within a subject is a tool that they can use to tackle a bigger problem within the exam setting. I think letting the student practice using these tools is an important part of learning process,…

I also consider rapport building and connecting the subject matter with the interests of the student as some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Patience, creativity,…

I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. A tutor can provide mentoring and perspective for a student. Tutoring in my opinion is more effective than lecturing as the student gets more individual attention. For me, a tutor's job is more than just assisting students in their academics. But more importantly, a tutor must be able to motivate and inspire students of who they truly are and help students discover their true potential by being a role model and building a positive relationship with students in the long term. I have the ability to grasp…

Inside Macquarie ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zara focused on place value and rounding to tens and hundreds, then practiced addition strategies for multi-digit numbers.

In Year 8, Daniel worked through surface area of cylinders, applying the formula in worded scenarios and reviewing volume calculations for a range of 3D shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily tackled trigonometric ratios with bearings and solved angles of elevation and depression questions using diagrams to visualise real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in algebra needed reminders to show working, especially when forming equations—needs to start independently form equation of question for which a revision test is scheduled for next class.

In Year 11, time management emerged as an obstacle during exam strategies; planning responses more efficiently was discussed after rushed answers cost marks.

For a Year 6 geometry assessment, "test score 18.5/40" reflected gaps in both content and exam confidence.

One Year 7 learner hesitated to attempt questions due to fear of mistakes, leading to less written practice and slower improvement each session.

Recent Achievements

A Macquarie Park tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now actively seeks help when stuck on trigonometry problems—this shift has led her to solve more complex questions independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who struggled with quadratic equations last term managed to work through several examples without errors and even identified areas he wanted extra practice in.

For a younger learner in Year 3, reading aloud became smoother; she now tackles unfamiliar words by sounding them out instead of skipping over them, finishing her first storybook without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumont Road Public School.
