Identify where a student is genuinely stuck rather than guessing, then build real understanding instead of rote answers. Much like analysing a workflow to find the key bottleneck, a good tutor pinpoints the obstacle and gives the student confidence to work independently. A strong quantitative foundation across computer science, mathematics, and…

A tutor is somebody who is most significantly; approachable. While a student can learn from a thousand different ways , a tutor is meant to expose them to those ways so that they achieve their goals. Keeping the deadlines in check, their is a responsibility to make sure that all of the essential learning is checked off the list to…

In the teaching phase, student-focused teaching would be my method of teaching, which is to discover what the students need instead of dumping knowledge, whilst showing respect and understanding. When a student raises concerns about a question, which I assume in maths and sciences usually composites of concepts from multiple areas of study, I…

The most important things a tutor can do is to understand how their student learns, be knowledgeable on the subject, and above all try. Understanding the subject matter is important but if there is no effort to adapt to the student then it is usually a waste of time. I am flexible around teaching styles and explanations of concepts. I can assist…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not just to teach them content - its essential to help a student become more self-sufficient in the field they are studying, and to teach them how to learn more effectively. For example, when teaching a child mathematics, I view simply teaching the content as not enough, as if you…

I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to their needs for their subject and pinpoint the exact cause for their frustration/ troubles. A tutor must be patient and listen to how the student feels and explains their material. Without this we can't understand where the gaps are in the students knowledge OR whether they really do understand, but just in a different way. I have infinite patience, I can adjust my communication style, and I when faced with something unfamiliar I have…

I think the main role of a tutor is encouraging confidence in their students. I have found that most of the time my students know the answer, they're just too afraid to say it. Or they may be on the right track and need a little guidance to fully understand a concept, making problem solving skills another thing that I try to pass on to my…

A tutor must give a student confidence and help them to not be overwhelmed by new topics. Once a student believes they can learn something, it is much easier to actually learn it. Tutors must also be personal and understand what method of teaching is most effective for each individual. As a recently graduated student, I am able to understand how…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspiring them to keep learning, by giving them "aha" moments when they understand something new. This satisfaction will keep inspiring them to continue learning, which may even turn into a life-long passion. Being able to kick start that process is a tutor's most important role. My…

Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them learn in a way they understand. Not everybody learns the same, so it's important that a tutor can help the student no matter what their learning style is. It's also important that a tutor and the student can get along as well, it's easier to listen to a person you like!…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is relate to their learning. Verity improved a great deal with her maths last year. Her results from school where excellent and have thanked Peter very much. He did such an awesome job in tutoring her.
Maree, McDowall

Inside McDowallTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Molly revised perimeter and area for various shapes using practice questions, while Year 8 Lerato focused on identifying PEEL paragraph elements in her English essay and also asked about calculating simple percentages.

In Year 10, Hayden worked through feedback on his analytical essay draft, specifically developing arguments and refining grammar.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in McDowall showed hesitation with independent problem-solving, particularly when she struggled to approach complex index law questions without prompts. This reliance on step-by-step guidance led to unfinished homework and missed opportunities for feedback before assessments.

In Year 8 English, one student's draft essays were often completed just before deadlines—meaning there was little time left for editing or refining arguments.

Another senior chemistry student frequently paraphrased resources incorrectly in assignments, risking unintentional plagiarism.

In a Year 6 maths session, getting frustrated after small mistakes meant focus was lost mid-task and required extra encouragement to return to the work at hand.

Recent Achievements

One Mcdowall tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help now talks through each step of complex trigonometry problems aloud, catching more mistakes before they happen.

Another high schooler recently finished her chemistry report independently, having previously struggled to organise her research; she came to the session with specific questions written out and only needed minor guidance.

Meanwhile, a primary student who found rotations overwhelming last term was able to recall and apply the correct sequence for rotating shapes on her own after practicing breaking down the process into smaller steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Everton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like McDowall State School.
