One of the important things, is inculcating love for learning. This includes addressing a student’s doubts while encouraging them to ask more, without making them feel embarrassed or self-conscious. Additionally, making real-life connections to certain topics while tutoring helps the student value its relevance in day-to-day life. As a tutor, I…

Apart from that, a tutor should definitely empower students with effective study methods, time management strategies, and organizational techniques as it encourages them to develop independence in their learning journey.…

For me it's very important to adjust to a student's individual needs because each student is different, some may quickly grasp things while others may need more time to. Often kids feel very overwhelmed and anxious when they can't understand or feel rushed. So being patient with them and building a positive environment is a crucial thing that…

Inside Merewether HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily practised converting between 12- and 24-hour time formats and worked on rounding decimals and significant figures.

For Year 8, Liam focused on algebraic equations with terms on both sides of the equals sign, as well as introducing factorisation by grouping like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ava revised linear equations in the form y = mx + b, including finding x- and y-intercepts from equations, alongside calculating gradient and midpoint using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly estimated solutions in algebra rather than isolating variables step-by-step, as noted: "he tends to estimate the value of x instead of using algebraic methods." This meant errors went unnoticed and deeper patterns weren't grasped.

In senior years, a Year 11 student was described as "too reliant on formulas" in financial maths—when faced with unfamiliar worded questions, she became stuck, unable to adapt or explain her thinking aloud.

Another senior student hesitated to put working on paper, resulting in lost marks during multi-step proofs; ideas stayed hidden until prompted. Confidence wavered after setbacks, leaving answers unfinished and frustration visible.

Recent Achievements

One Merewether Heights tutoring session saw a high school student, Danika, go from hesitantly checking answers to confidently correcting her tutor's mistakes and finishing her geometry assignment with 100%.

Another recent win: Liz, also in high school, used to avoid asking questions but now brings up challenging HSC data problems herself—she even explained z-scores back to her tutor when they disagreed on an answer.

Meanwhile, Lara (primary) started tackling division more independently; she now talks through her process out loud and can recall key times tables during timed games, after previously needing frequent prompts just to begin.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Adamstown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Merewether Heights Public School.
