A tutor can intiate the interest in studies in the student and get him/her out of the virtual box of fear that a certain subject is difficult to master. My strength is the vast experience I have as a tutor since last eight years. Also the fact that I have completed higher degrees and this has enabled me to understand various concepts better which…

Teach them how to think for themselves and how to be critical of any situation so that they may find answers on their own. Teach them that values are more important than success in life. Educate them to be all-rounders. Give them hope, encourage them and not allow failure to bring them down lest they may falter into the wrong path. I was…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure that the student understands the concepts thoroughly. Not just a few questions or math problems, but the concept is the most important to get through. As a tutor it's a crucial job to make a base for the student, as this is the foundation for the student which needs to be really…

I feel that understanding the student's moods and learning styles is very important for a tutor to teach effectively. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

I believe a tutor should adapt to the student's learning style. Beyond that, I also consider building a strong bond with the student, creating a supportive and comfortable environment, setting clear goals, providing constructive feedback, and instilling a sense of confidence and self-efficacy to be equally important. Ultimately, the goal is to…

In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. This is important because it is impossible to engage a student into learning without building a positive rapport with them. The other important thing is to always encourage them to keep trying and…

I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. I strongly believe that it's important for the tutor to motivate the student to be confident and answer irrespective of the answer being right or wrong. Students are…

I think being more practical, by being more open. By explaining problems with examples of real life, with things they already know and have seen. I think helping them with the home work related problems and also giving them a problem or two to solve from the teaching of the day. Simple things like repetitive recalling and revising can also do…

Inside Merrylands WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Marcus focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as converting fractions to decimals using step-by-step examples.

Year 7 student Sarah practiced adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and revised chance concepts through real-world scenarios.

For Year 10, David worked on essay structure and building background knowledge about set texts by breaking down prompts and discussing planning techniques.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, a student hesitated to use formal language in essays and struggled with planning, resulting in "structure issues within the essay" as noted by a tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student tackling comprehension questions often rushed through texts without patience, leading to misinterpretation and missed details.

In Year 5 mathematics, another student avoided writing out working for multiplication algorithms—preferring mental calculation—which led to repeated mistakes that were hard to trace.

When spelling was assessed in Year 7, uncertainty around new words meant progress stalled until the "look, cover, write, check" method was actively used.

Recent Achievements

One Merrylands West tutor noticed a Year 10 student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now methodically checking each step in long division—showing much more patience than before.

Another high school student had been hesitant to ask for help with essay structure, but this session worked bit by bit through each section, openly discussing where she felt stuck and using feedback to clarify her ideas.

A younger student mastered both the 9x and 11x tables after earlier struggles and started confidently breaking down worded multiplication problems into smaller steps without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greystanes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cerdon College.
