The ultimate goal for a tutor is to help their students grow and provide them with essential skills to their academic. Most importantly, the tutor has to do this in the attitude of a friend who genuinely wishes their student the best because they need to trust the tutor and know that they are there whenever they need them. I think it would be acknowledging the difficulty in subjects to know that they aren't alone with their difficulties and also being able to explain to them the content of their subjects in new ways that makes sense to them. And also make them feel confident in their abilities as well as teaching them a new confidence of autonomy when it comes to…

A tutor should be more than someone who lectures and instead be someone who brings value through listening and understanding challenges and working through them with the student to find solutions. A tutor can enable a student to understand a subject, not just enough knowledge to pass. A tutor can teach more than just a syllabus, but also learning…

I believe that patience and consideration are the most important things, as it can take very different amounts of time for people to understand concepts that I may have learnt at a faster pace, or that another student learnt faster. Flexibility is also important as everybody learns in a unique way, and what may help one person completely…

Since students most commonly get tutoring as they do not understand the approach taken by their teacher to the subject, I believe the most important thing is to relate to the student, and see the problem from their perspective. This leads to the ability to create personalised approaches to the theories presented in class, and allow the student to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. There are numerous things a tutor should be able to do. I think providing these students with lessons that pinpoint certain issues and flaws, acknowledging student welfare (such as stress), and ultimately showing (or delivering), that same powerful desire for their students to do well, are only a few things a tutor should provide for a student.…

Inside MoorookaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Charlie worked on adding and subtracting fractions, as well as rounding decimals using practical examples.

In Year 8, Lily focused on algebraic equations and interpreting number planes, practicing with diagrams to build understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jacob revised compound interest problems through recurrence relations and applied them to real-life loan scenarios for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often struggled to stay focused during lessons, particularly at the start; as one tutor noted, "he had a very difficult time focussing during this session," which meant he needed more guidance and repeated explanations in basic fractions and decimals work.

In contrast, a senior student (Year 11) left working out incomplete when tackling square roots and complex equations—sometimes forgetting materials or skipping steps—so errors weren't easily spotted.

When it came to applying concepts from examples to exercises in higher-level maths, confidence faltered and progress slowed, especially if previous methods hadn't been retained.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moorooka noticed that one Year 9 student, who used to get stuck on fraction problems, now multiplies and divides fractions with only a quick prompt, even tackling decimal questions independently.

In Year 11 maths, another student has gone from hesitating on algebra to attempting exam-style questions solo—he recently completed a full module of problem-solving tasks without needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised their tutor by recalling previously tricky map skills from memory and confidently locating places during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Moorooka State School.
