I think that a tutor should help foster understanding of difficult concepts so that the student is able to do the work themselves, rather than doing the work for them. Additionally, going over the work with them, and showing them how they can improve is important. Ensuring that they understand ways they can get better helps more than telling them,…

I believe patience, resilience, and the ability to think fast to generate alternate ways to regain the student's focus, particularly if they are on the younger side. Aside from paying attention to the student's attention span, more importantly, a tutor should be prepared on going about different routes to ensure understanding of course content and…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for their students is show that they are interested in them as individuals. I have found that reliability is something students and parents alike, really appreciate in a tutor. It is important for a tutor to be someone that both student and parent can depend on, as we are there to provide an important service to both. In regards to the student, we are there to help them learn, and regarding parents, a tutors presence is…

I believe that every individual learns things in different ways. In a classroom, each teacher will have their own way of presenting and teaching the content, and this method is most likely to be consistent throughout the year. Whilst this may cater for some students, and help them excel in the particular subject, it might not be suitable for other…

As per my experience, the most crucial role of a tutor is to provide personalised guidance that meets the unique needs of each student. I consider reliability, attentiveness, an easy going attitude, knowledgeability and someone who is relatable to be the most important traits a tutor can offer. Inside MoorookaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Charlie worked on adding and subtracting fractions, as well as rounding decimals using practical examples.

In Year 8, Lily focused on algebraic equations and interpreting number planes, practicing with diagrams to build understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jacob revised compound interest problems through recurrence relations and applied them to real-life loan scenarios for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often struggled to stay focused during lessons, particularly at the start; as one tutor noted, "he had a very difficult time focussing during this session," which meant he needed more guidance and repeated explanations in basic fractions and decimals work.

In contrast, a senior student (Year 11) left working out incomplete when tackling square roots and complex equations—sometimes forgetting materials or skipping steps—so errors weren't easily spotted.

When it came to applying concepts from examples to exercises in higher-level maths, confidence faltered and progress slowed, especially if previous methods hadn't been retained.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moorooka noticed that one Year 9 student, who used to get stuck on fraction problems, now multiplies and divides fractions with only a quick prompt, even tackling decimal questions independently.

In Year 11 maths, another student has gone from hesitating on algebra to attempting exam-style questions solo—he recently completed a full module of problem-solving tasks without needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised their tutor by recalling previously tricky map skills from memory and confidently locating places during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Moorooka State School.
