Go at a pace in which the student feels comfortable, as going too quickly may be the reason they didn't understand it when their teachers taught them. Following this a tutor needs to have done some work on the subject before seeing the student as if the tutor doesn't understand what he/she is saying, the student has no chance. Also going through…

I think a tutor can give a student confidence, that a student doesn't need to be intimidated by a STEM class. The general attitude that these subject are 'too hard' or that a student 'will never use these skills again' sets up bright students for failure before they even set foot in a classroom. The most important thing a tutor can do is boost a…

The most important things a tutor can do are: 1. Provide a safe and supportive environment where the student feels comfortable sharing their concerns. This helps to identify the student’s preferred learning style and areas to focus on. 2. Give the student the tools they need to learn on their own. Instead of just giving solutions, a tutor…

To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. A tutor shouldn't teach a student but rather guide them to asking the right questions and figuring out the right paths to take in order to get the information that they need. I have only recently finished school, this allows me insight to a more updated…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is be able to get them back in the right direction when they are lost. To give the student the tools and knowledge to be able to further their own learning. My strengths as a tutor in particular are my versatility. According to me, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is wake up their curiosity. Getting good grades are important, but equally important is to make sure that the student is enjoying and understanding the subject being taught. As this helps make the student pursue the subjects further. These are the future of the humanity,…

The ultimate goal for a tutor is to help their students grow and provide them with essential skills to their academic. Most importantly, the tutor has to do this in the attitude of a friend who genuinely wishes their student the best because they need to trust the tutor and know that they are there whenever they need them. I help my students to…

Improve their self esteem by helping them do better at school. I think the student being tutored is the most important person, so you want to help them and improve their skills as much as possible. A tutor should be able to establish rapport and trust by being honest. This is the critical element to a successful tutoring relationship. Being patient is also very important as what might be obvious and easy for a tutor may not be for that student. Being a good listener is another essential characteristic that a tutor must-have, as it's vital to…

To be able to leave them confident and capable of successfully attempting the concepts discussed with them. Help them reach their full potential without doing all the work for them; I think it is important to let them do some hard work now and again so they can appreciate it more when they are congratulated for their success, and so that they are not 'coddled' into thinking other people will do all their work for them. I believe that patience and consideration are the most important things, as it can take very different amounts of time for people to understand concepts that I may have learnt at a faster pace, or that another student learnt faster. The most important thing will be to help the student find his/her interest in the subject. Also, the possibility of giving online lessons might be a good idea for the student to schedule the classes. And finally, my methodology is based on a close treat with the student as I don’t want him to see me as…

Inside Mount Gravatt EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Petra worked on drafting a short story for an upcoming English assessment and practiced integer calculations, focusing on accuracy.

Year 9 student Mia focused on algebraic substitution by working through school quiz problems and also revised key skills in solving equations.

For Year 10, Jay tackled log laws and long division, rounding out the session with targeted algebra revision to address areas identified in recent classwork.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, a student missed several homework tasks and did not bring the required workbook ("Homework book was not bought"), which limited practice with algebraic questions.

In Year 11 English, another student needed repeated reminders to proofread essays and struggled with sentence structure; as one tutor observed, "Her sentence and paragraph construction needs to be improved."

For a Year 7 Maths learner, over-reliance on calculators during percentage conversions led to errors in tests.

When written solutions in Year 10 Maths lacked step-by-step justification, sign errors crept in unnoticed—making it harder to spot misunderstandings during review.

Recent Achievements

A Mount Gravatt East tutor noticed a big change in one Year 11 student who, after struggling with complex problem-solving, now confidently analyses and solves multi-step maths questions without hesitation.

In Year 9 English, another student went from submitting rough drafts full of tense errors to producing a well-structured essay draft with only minor grammatical mistakes—she now proofreads her work before handing it in.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who used to avoid tricky fraction problems has begun tackling them head-on and even checks her answers for accuracy before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Gravatt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Queensland Pathways State College - Mt Gravatt Campus.
