I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is helping them fully understand the problems as well as the solutions. The tutor should help students understand the importance of each step in the solution instead of helping them seeking the final answer. I have experiences in teaching and tutoring different groups of students including…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. Allowing them to do it, will build their confidence for their future, which will be eventually worth it for their life. As a tutor, I am always friendly, patiently try to…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make learning simple, build the student's confidence, and create a safe space where they don't feel scared to ask questions. A tutor should be patient, supportive, and able to explain concepts in different ways until the student really understands. Most importantly, a tutor should motivate…

A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. I am over the moon and beyond grateful with her conduct throughout the entire time I utilized her services. Renee is efficient, dedicated, intelligent, compassionate, friendly, understanding, mature, supportive, honest, an excellent communicator, flexible, very professional, and very adept at handling crunch time stressful moments. She really showed me what she was made of, especially in the last couple of months when my Daughter went through some personal challenges and when deadlines were fast approaching and stress levels were high. Overall, I am so pleased with Renee's services. She is an invaluable asset to your service and I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone.

Inside MurarrieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lincoln worked on solving linear equations and reviewed key ideas in probability, including constructing sample spaces for simple experiments.

In Year 10, Rebecca focused on dividing polynomials using long division and applied derivatives to solve problems involving rates of change.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student completed exam revision on time series analysis—such as three-point moving averages—and tackled questions on bivariate data analysis using real datasets from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Maths Methods student avoided attempting unfamiliar questions independently, as seen when she hesitated to work through differentiation problems without step-by-step guidance.

"She struggled attempting questions on her own," noted a tutor after one session.

In Year 10, another student missed foundational concepts due to a recent subject change and felt overwhelmed revisiting new content, which led to gaps in understanding long division of polynomials and trigonometric identities.

For a primary-level learner, incomplete homework persisted week-to-week, making it harder to reinforce key skills before moving onto new material—unfinished tasks lingered in the background during lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Murarrie recently saw some real progress across a range of students. One Year 11 student, after struggling with data analysis, learned to use Excel functions to create scatter graphs and residual plots, then interpreted the direction and type of relationships independently for her PSMT project.

Another high schooler who used to wait for hints now attempts complex familiar questions solo during revision—she's started highlighting her own areas of concern and requesting targeted help.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was previously hesitant about maths now openly asks when stuck instead of guessing and finished all her homework problems using new strategies she'd practiced together with her tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulimba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Murarrie State School.
