A good tutor should help their student develop a love for what they are learning. When this is done successfully, this has a knock-on effect on the student's results as they are more engaged with the content they are learning. This starts with the tutor being passionate about the content they are teaching and being determined to push the student…

Having been tutored by several people over my high school career, I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for students are enabling them to reach their full potential. As well as providing them to with opportunities and equipment to succeed in learning, through encouraging them, guiding them to the answer rather than give it to them and…

I think it is important to be adaptable, each student and each age group will learn differently. Even moreso, I think it is vital that tutors are patient, listening to their students and trying to make them feel as comfortable as possible even when faced with a challenge. I think as a tutor and in general, I am very hard working, and will be …

Patience and desire to help. I believe it is most important as a tutor to show we respect students and never act annoyed even for the most basic questions as every student learns at different pace. Therefore, maintaining an enthusiastic attitude and being non-judgemental to treat all students with same time and patience to allow them to feel…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

Tutors should listen to students, take their concerns and opinions into consideration. Tutors should encourage and motivate students to do their best. Tutors should be resourceful, considering varying teaching methods to allow students to more easily understand concepts. Tutors should work within the abilities of the students and therefore should…

A tutor needs to be able to make sessions engaging and enjoyable so their students will want to come back to each lesson. They need to also be able to be someone students can trust and feel comfortable with as they do spend a lot of time together. The hard work and determination I have to make sure my students can learn as much as possible means I…

In my opinion, building a student’s confidence and providing friendly assistance is the best any tutor can do for their students. As someone who has received tutoring in the past, I know how much of a difference these simple things can make to a nervous or hesitant student. I believe my strongest attributes as a tutor are that I am very patient,…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for their student's is inspire them. I want to enlighten them with my love for learning and organisation, inspiring them to do and be their best. I also would empower my student's to believe in themselves and gain confidence in their abilities, as I consider a high self esteem, when it comes to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable and to help them feel like learning is not a chore but a good experience. In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instill a love of learning within them. If a student enjoys learning and wants to learn, they will thrive. A big strength for me is being able to simplify complex ideas into simple, digestible information. I am patient, friendly and encouraging. I always get my students to try…

Inside Neutral BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlotte revised long division and unit fractions using practice questions and homework review.

In Year 8, Hannah tackled index laws as well as multiplication and division of exponentials, with targeted exercises to strengthen her skills.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on solving linear equations that included combining like terms, and worked through algebraic inequalities—practising number line notation and remembering to flip the inequality sign when dividing by a negative.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths struggled with remembering to write out all working steps, especially when solving algebra equations. As one tutor noted, "forgetting to keep negative signs clear in working led to confusion and extra corrections."

In Year 10, another learner hesitated to complete set Naplan practice papers independently—homework was often skipped or replaced with easier tasks.

A senior student tackling bearing and trigonometry questions found it difficult to retain new strategies without regular note-taking or revision, as lessons revealed gaps when reviewing past topics. Missing homework meant these gaps lingered until the next session.

Recent Achievements

One Neutral Bay tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 10 student who used to make frequent "silly mistakes" in trigonometry; after revisiting problem steps and focusing on targeted examples, she now works through bearing questions almost entirely independently.

Another high school student recently began volunteering her own strategies for tough algebraic equations instead of waiting for hints, reflecting stronger self-direction than just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, in Year 5 maths, a student who struggled with fractions is now confidently using the "pie method" to solve problems without prompting—she completed every question on her own this session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Neutral Bay Public School.
