The most important thing a biology tutor can do isn't just to lead them to the right answers but help them build confidence and self-motivation. As a tutor, I aim to help students develop independence. For me, a successful teacher is someone who can guide students to no longer needing one. I am quick to identify the strengths and weaknesses of…

I believe that tutoring for a student should be a safe zone space where they can make mistakes. Tutoring does not have the same pressue for a student that school can, as such it is important for a biology tutor to be patient and adaptive when a student is struggling with a concept. A tutor should welcome mistakes as an opportunity to grow. I also…

Establishing clear boundaries while being friendly and approachable; there is friendliness but understanding you are there to help them succeed. I draw a strong line that there is time for things, and the time spent with me is to learn and grow. Assisting students to see the value of education and inspiring a genuine appreciation for it are also…

Providing the right resources and support both academically and personally. Although possessing good academic knowledge is great, success comes from having good support and balance in every aspect of life. That is why I believe supporting students in a holistic manner is an important trait of a biology tutor. I am patient and understanding. I…

I think one of the most important things a biology tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. It’s not just about giving answers, but helping students understand how to approach problems, think critically, and develop strategies they can use on their own. A good tutor creates a safe space where students…

Most important things I would say would be to be encouraging and prepared. As I said students can feel discouraged sometimes, so I think being positive and patient so that they can have an open mind and have some resilience when content is hard is crucial. As a tutor I think one of my biggest strengths is that I am a student as well and have…

My 11yr old has benefited greatly from his weekly maths tutorials. Sam's tutor, Matt, built a wonderful relationship with Sam. He was always encouraging and was able to explain processes in a way Sam could understand. Sam has gone from struggling with maths to confidently achieving sound and above marks. Most importantly he is actually enjoying maths now and his confidence has grown immensely.

Inside NewtownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Lucy worked on the two-times and three-times tables, along with strategies for adding three two-digit numbers as used in multiplication.

For Year 6, Sam practised long division with remainders and explored multiplying by 10s, 100s, and 1000s using split strategy multiplication.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Chloe focused on converting fractions to decimals and adding decimals together, applying these skills through real-number examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student hesitated to attempt unfamiliar addition problems unless prompted, often avoiding written working out of fear of mistakes—"she tries to do everything in her head and does not say anything when she can't figure it out."

During a Year 5 division task, confusion arose between multiplication and division, especially with larger numbers; over-reliance on reference booklets made adapting to new problem types harder.

Across both years, incomplete homework or avoidance was common—one lesson stalled when "she said her teacher might have the booklet" but produced it only after extra encouragement.

These patterns left gaps in confidence during assessments and slowed progress on multi-step questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Newtown noticed a big shift for Isla (Year 6) who used to need lots of prompting with her maths assessments—last session, she caught her own mistakes and corrected them independently, showing real growth in self-checking.

Harrison (Year 10) struggled with reading aloud from science reports but, after some guided practice, managed to read sections out loud and even self-corrected tricky parts by the end of the lesson.

Ashlee (Year 8), who had found spelling challenging, finished her latest spelling test with only one error and was able to use new words accurately in sentences.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ipswich Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ipswich Girls' Grammar School including Ipswich Junior Grammar School.
