I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to never patronise them, and always show a keen interest (not just aptitude) in the tutored subject. I think my strengths as a tutor are patience, sincerity, kindness, and a high understanding of and passion for English as a subject of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is grow their confidence in the subject matter so that they know, with work, they will understand what their teacher is telling them and succeed rather than constantly feeling defeated. I believe my main strength as a tutor will be my ability to communicate with students. It is important not to…

I think understanding each student is an important part to tutoring, and being able to motivate each student into learning for themselves should be the ultimate goal for any teacher. I've had some teachers that did that for me and I have them remembered always. I think students would like me. I'm easygoing and try to make the content appealing,…

In my opinion, it is important to teach children in simple ways so that they can understand even the complex and difficult concepts. It is also important to understand questions asked by students and give appropriate answers to their questions. Students need to be acknowledged and respected. As a tutor, I am a patient person and a good listener. I…

I believe that a tutor plays an incredible different role to the classroom teacher. Being a role that has one-on-one interaction with a student, a tutor's most important thing is to focus their practice and method to the individual characteristics of the student. An example of this could be having activities with high intensity and movement for…

The most important thing is definitely being patient and kind. A lot of people sometimes forget children/teens are not fully functioning adults yet, and they’re learning. Therefore, it’s very important to push them to the best they can do. By being indulgent and firm at the same time, I believe a tutor can get children to be their very best,…

I believe that if a tutor is kind, patient and shows respect, they will see greater results with their students. In order for effective learning, it is paramount to create a distraction-free, positive environment, and prepare well-thought out lessons ahead of time. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, I think that if a tutor is ready to motivate,…

I think that if a tutor can initially convince their student why what they’re studying is important, then the relationship will be much more amicable. I also think it’s important that we make sure they’re really understanding key concepts, rather than making it seem like they do to avoid embarrassment around or working harder, I have seen…

I believe it is integral to grasp the individual students learning style and tailor my lessons accordingly. As a part of this, it's also important to learn what doesn't work for them, and avoid these techniques. For example, an English teacher might teach them poetic terms by getting the student to write out definitions. If a students doesn't…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for their student, and understand the way that they learn. Understanding where their challenges are and where their strengths are. Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

Children would prefer a friendly environment where they can feel comfortable enough to ask questions and let the tutor know that they don't understanding anything. I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

Help them understand the why behind the answers. Be supportive and patient during the learning process. Katie has been absolutely amazing to my daughter. Even just on the first trial session my daughter felt she has learned a lot from Katie. My daughter has been stressing out with her Chemistry assessment but with Katie's help she was able to submit it on time and hopefully she will get a high mark for it.

Inside Norman ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Yuvaan worked on probability using Venn diagrams and also practised finding the perimeter of sectors and calculating the volume of cylinders.

Year 10 student Emma focused on graphing logarithmic functions and solving optimisation questions by applying first and second derivatives to real-world scenarios.

For Year 11, Lucas revised probability density functions alongside quartile ranges, tackling practice problems from recent exam papers to strengthen his understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often became overwhelmed by complex calculus questions, "getting lost in formulas" and feeling stress when breaking down chain or substitution rules.

In Year 8, another struggled to recall key steps for algebraic simplification—sometimes forgetting methods mid-task, which led to confusion as problems grew harder.

For a younger primary student, difficulty focusing on one activity at a time showed up during numeracy: he wanted to switch back to writing letters instead of counting, and sometimes mixed up numbers like 15 and 51.

These patterns left gaps in understanding and made exam conditions more challenging.

Recent Achievements

A Norman Park tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after struggling to identify errors in their statistics work, they now catch mistakes on their own and use the correct method without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with integration rules can now quickly simplify expressions and spot derivatives of simple equations much faster than before.

On the primary side, one Year 1 learner—who was previously unsure about blending sounds—now independently blends and decodes new words during reading activities and counts up to fifty without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as New Farm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Thomas' School.
