I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while developing their understanding of the subject, not simply answering the questions for them which could create a false sense of confidence. My strengths are patience, clear communication, and the ability to explain concepts in different ways depending on how a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are providing personalised attention and support, being patient and understanding, using various teaching methods to cater to different learning styles and helping the student build confidence and motivation. Along with this, I believe a good tutor should be able to explain concepts clearly,…

Personalisation. In a classroom, the teacher's attention is divided and the material needs to be taught in ways that the majority understands. However, each student understands and learns differently so having it taylored to the individual (figuring out what they know, what they don't know and what they misunderstood) builds the foundation of…

At face value, the most important thing is of course getting good results itself. That is the intent and purpose of the tutor. But in the bigger picture, the tutor must also develop the soft skills of the student, develop professionalism and perfectionism in their work, develop discipline and help them grow holistically I am patient, can come up…

I think the most crucial part of any tutoring experience is to make sure that the student knows that the tutor is there for them and will not get frustrated if mess something up. If the tutor comes off as condescending or annoyed at a lack of progress, it can allow the student to put added pressure on him/herself or create an aversion to learning…

Among the most important things a tutor can do for a student is that a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning style so that the student would be able to learn the material in a way that is analogous to their mode of synthesising knowledge. A tutor must do this all the while being open and kind and most especially warm towards the…

Help them to understand that they can learn. That they understand that teaching is one aspect of the education process and the other is learning. That all students have the capacity to learn especially if the teacher is prepared to apply their best effort to offering those students a way to understand the information. This can be assisted if both…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to instill confidence and inspire a student's curiosity for the subject. This comes from clear explanations in class, well-prepared lessons and patience from a tutor so that students can learn and gain confidence in a subject at their own pace. Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect with a…

A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

I believe a tutor should be understanding, patient, passionate, and encouraging. I had a tutor for my HSC and I believe that to gain a strong connection with the student, you must be their biggest cheerleader. You must be there to support them through their obstacles and successes and be an ear to listen when things become overwhelming. A tutor…

I believe a tutor should teach and engage a student in an way that cultivates a student's passion in the subject. Create a space of no judgement, there are a lot of questions that students find intimidating to ask in a class environment, so as a tutor, creating a safe space for them to ask those questions is the most important goal to achieve. Not only does this allow for a further understanding of a topic, but also allows the student to be able to enjoy the…

Inside North BalgowlahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lilly focused on strengthening multiplication and division skills, using games like "Hit the Button" to build times tables fluency and then worked through strategies for remembering tricky groups such as 4s and 12s.

In Year 9, Amelie has been tackling Surds—simplifying, multiplying/dividing, and rationalising denominators—as well as consolidating her understanding of volume formulas in compound shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jerry concentrated on algebraic factorisation methods and revising equations in preparation for upcoming tests, often working through textbook exercises and practice questions to target weaker areas.

Recent Challenges

One student lost marks in a recent Year 8 Maths exam for not showing working and relying too much on mental calculations. As noted, "he said that he lost a lot of marks in his exam as he did not show his working out."

During algebra revision, calculation errors crept in when steps weren't clearly set out or the calculator wasn't used reliably.

In senior Physics (Year 12), another student's notes were described as needing better layout: "Her setting out—we will continue to practice good setting out so it becomes a habit." This led to confusion revisiting circular motion questions before assessments.

Recent Achievements

A North Balgowlah tutor recently saw Jerry, a Year 8 student, shift from rushing through algebra to slowing down and double-checking his work—he now catches his own calculation errors before asking for help.

Meanwhile, Clara in Year 12 has started tackling past exam papers independently and explaining her approach out loud when stuck, which marks a big change from earlier sessions where she hesitated to try new question types.

For a younger student, Lilly (Year 3) took real ownership of her times tables practice by showing how she fixed mistakes on "Hit the Button" and talking through what she learned each time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Farmhouse Montessori School.
