I think the most important something a tutor can do for a student when it comes to trying to teach them is, being close to them and on their level. That way, it is easier for the student to absorb information coming from you as it would feel like the information is coming from a friend and not someone who is greater than them or better than them…

I think the most important things for a tutor to do is to make sure the student understands how to do the question, and not just give them the answer or formula. It is essential for them to utilise all the skills and I want to foster the ability to identify which methods are required for each question. I like to teach in fun ways so hopefully that…

A tutor\'s first duty must be to create a comfortable environment for the student to learn. This means serving as a friend, and as someone who is receptive and understanding to the needs of the student. It is through this that students will grow and be most efficient in their studies. As a humanities oriented tutor, my strengths lie in my ability…

Make them feel confident in their abilities is definitely the most significant. Providing them with the skills to not only pass the exam or assessment but give them the ability to progress through school and further confidently. Effective teaching of a student to me involves two fundamental aspects, this is; development of key fundamental concepts and knowledge, and maturing a student's perspective of their learning through evolving of their own self-confidence and faith in themselves. While I consider grades and academic excellence to be a major characteristic tutors should have, I additionally believe that it is extensively important for tutors to enlist students to have faith in themselves academically. Often, although students may be taught principles and content well by their tutor, they may not actually be able to…

A few of the important things a tutor can do for a student is to care, understand and support. Although a tutor may have an incredible breadth of knowledge, it is the way that they deliver this knowledge that is key. Firstly, they need to care and understand the student's level and ability to learn and process information. As much as delivering…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and personable with the student. Tutoring is very different from a school environment, in that the benefits that exist are going at a pace that is suitable to the student's needs. Tutors are understanding and can target specific difficulties in a student's learning. We also not only identify…

I believe a tutor should be fully committed to each students' improvement and in doing so, also act as a mentor to meaningfully guide students. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is listen so as to understand any shortcomings in their approach to the content being taught. Any tutor can teach the content, but the most…

Encouragement, and patience. Different students excel in different focus areas, and they require help in the ones they struggle in. But you also can't give them a false confidence. Make them certain in their capabilities, and their belief in themselves, and it be based on the fact they have those capabilities. Patience, and a willingness to…

The most important things tutors can do is to be enthusiastic and engaging about the subject their teaching their student because this then allows students to believe too, that the subject they're learning is not boring or bad. Moreover, tutors must have confidence in their student in succeeding and doing well, in which the Pygmalion effect proves…

The most important thing is to make them our friends so that they can share their difficulties with us. Secondly, a tutor should use creative techniques to make concepts easy to understand. a tutor must strive to find what a student lack and try to complement it. For example , a slacking student , in most cases, might be just lacking vision for his future. A tutor must guide him towards setting targets for himself. I am able to identify learning styles of…

Great service. Our tutor Iqra is excellent. Very responsible and always makes sure that Hazel feels comfortable with tasks. She often stays extra time to give Hazel breaks. Hazel has become more confident with maths and is enjoying it. I actually asked my daughter if she wanted to continue with tuition and she said, "yes mum it makes a difference ". That's all I needed to hear. Thank you for a great service.

Inside North RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Cadence focused on calculating areas and perimeters as well as tackling division problems using her school homework.

Year 6 student Caesar worked through probability questions and practiced converting between different units of time.

For a high schooler, Year 8 Mia reviewed indices laws and completed revision exercises involving simplifying expressions with both positive and negative exponents.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student was reminded to "show working instead of thinking about the question," but often avoided writing steps in algebra, making it harder to catch errors and slowing progress on new concepts.

In Year 7, a student frequently forgot homework when revising for a test—this meant less targeted feedback during lessons.

Another senior student struggled with aligning decimals correctly in calculations, which led to answers being off by factors of ten or more.

Meanwhile, in primary years, one learner's messy handwriting made subtraction mistakes harder to spot; as a tutor noted, "his layout made it difficult to check his own work."

Recent Achievements

One North Rocks tutor noted that Jasper, a high school student, managed to solve extension-level algebraic equations and indices on his own after previously needing more support with similar problems.

In another recent session, Jacob, also in high school, successfully remembered and applied the laws of indices adaptively to new questions—he'd often hesitated before when presented with unfamiliar formats.

Meanwhile, Marcelino in Year 5 has begun thinking independently on number line questions instead of waiting for hints; last week he divided a number line into quarters by himself and explained his reasoning without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlingford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like North Rocks Public School.
