One of the most important things a tutor can do is understand a student's potential and identify the specific areas where they are struggling. Every student has unique strengths, abilities, and learning needs. By assessing their current understanding, a tutor can recognise what the student already knows, where misconceptions exist, and which parts…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to improvise to their learning style and capabilities to provide the maximum support to help them grow as both students and as people. Having struggled throughout my own education and my initial problems with maths and physics, I feel that I am particularly able to relate to the…

A tutor should not only teach, but also guide. My greatest tutors in my high school journey resonated with me deeply and gave me a deep passion of studying. They not only helped me with questions but also provided guidance on managing stress and maintaining a healthy mental state to guide my studying. This allowed me to grow the most as a student…

A tutor must be able to adapt to the specific needs of a student, including their teaching style and manner as there is no point in teaching a child in a manner that doesn't suit their learning ability and preferences. My strengths as a tutor are my ability to adapt my teaching style for different students, as well as explaining things in a manner…

Listen to their ideas and help them realise how they can be moulded to fit the criteria that is set for them to meet. This is also coming from my own perspective of what I'd expect, as most times teachers impose their ideas on students and they are left alone to not be able to think for themselves. I can explain concepts quite well, and I make…

Students are often scared of certain subjects and avoid facing their problems. For a tutor to be successful at his/her job, they need to be able to help the child overcome those fears and enjoy the subject they were once afraid of. Tutoring can be very challenging sometimes. A tutor can teach a student with the best dedication until both are satisfied, with calmness and enthusiasm. There is no space for faster actions or rapidness in this field. I always wish that there should not be any weak students, so I used to teach by focusing to their weaknesses. Even though it was basic for students to know, I just teach them again to make them easy. I always ask them about the basic questions which they learned in their lower classes, this makes me realise where I have to start with in order to…

I believe the most important things that a tutor can do for a student mainly relies on what the end goal of the student is. If it is just to get the homework done, it will get done. But, for me as a tutor, I would personally make sure that every student understands the concept from the beginning rather than providing a general overview. I believe…

I think the impact that a tutor can have on a student should not be understated. Inside NorthmeadTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and explored equivalent fractions using visual models.

For Year 9, Ethan practised solving quadratic equations by both factorising and completing the square, with extra attention to finding turning points on graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah worked through trigonometric functions—drawing their graphs and analysing amplitude and phase shifts—alongside applying radians and unit circle concepts to real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student relied on Desmos for graphing but hesitated to input values or interpret function outputs independently; "more experience with Desmos" was suggested, as he often skipped visual aids and lost confidence when tackling abstract equations.

In a Year 6 maths session, messy working out—especially in multi-digit subtraction—made it hard to spot copying errors or double-check answers, as noted: "she finished her quiz very fast but didn't double check her answers properly and ended up with multiple wrong answers."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student forgot to complete both sides of assigned homework pages and sometimes arrived without essential materials, leading to incomplete practice and less productive lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Northmead noticed that a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle indices problems is now solving complex questions independently and even tries new strategies without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student has started redoing homework questions she got wrong the first time—something she avoided before—and now checks her answers carefully for mistakes.

In a recent primary session, one student used out-loud thinking to break down tricky addition problems, openly catching and correcting errors on her own, which marks a big shift from staying quiet when unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wentworthville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School.
