The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to stay patient with him or her when they are not able get hold of a concept. That is what differentiates a great teacher from a good teacher. Students need to make mistakes in order to learn and it is responsibility of the teacher to stay patient while they are making mistakes and to also…

I think the most important thing i can do for a student is to create a safe space for learning to enable the student to grow their confidence and independence. That way we can enable them to tackle challenges on their own in the future. I would say my key strengths are patience, clear communication, and adaptability. I take time to understand how…

First and foremost helping the student to develop logic, as logic is everywhere, and making them understand each problem before solving it. The most important way would be to change the way of learning. Finally, the main part would be to increase their grades, so that they can enroll in world-reputed universities and colleges in the near future…

In my opinion, a tutor is not just for supporting a student to complete his assessments and helping them to solve questions. A tutor has an even more close connection with a student than his school teacher. Hence he has a better chance to identify what is the level of a particular student and what support he or she actually needs. Other…

I think the most significant thing that a tutor can do is to instill confidence in the student, make them able to learn, and independent learners. It's not providing them with the answers but making them see the 'why' about things. A good tutor listens, is attuned to the way of learning of the student, and gets them at ease asking questions and…

Inside Oak ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Max focused on multiplying and subtracting larger numbers and worked through basic area calculations for squares.

For Year 8, Ava tackled probability problems and statistics questions, using real-life scenarios to deepen her understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Liam practiced factorising algebraic expressions and expanding brackets, building confidence with indices in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 maths, one student regularly avoided writing down working for equations, saying, "I can do this in my head," which led to missed sign errors and confusion with negatives.

For a Year 8 algebra task, skipping steps meant the method was unclear, so extra time was spent finding mistakes instead of moving forward.

In Year 7 English, not meeting the required essay word count ("didn't understand he needed to use 100 words") resulted in lost marks and frustration.

Meanwhile, a primary student forgot their workbook for multiple sessions, delaying progress on basic arithmetic skills and causing repeated catch-up.

Recent Achievements

One Oak Park tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after previously struggling with negative numbers and often getting sidetracked during lessons, now completes problems with negatives more accurately—even managing to stay focused for longer stretches.

In a senior session, a Year 11 student began actively asking questions about formulas for surface area instead of quietly moving on when unsure; he's also connecting symbols like 'r' to their meaning in context, which hadn't happened before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised her tutor by independently explaining errors in her own narrative writing and confidently sharing her opinions on the book club novel "Wonder."

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Francis de Sales School.
