The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to allow them to understand the subject and achieve a good grade in that subject. This goes hand in hand with making a student feel more confident and relaxed about the subject and hopefully find enjoyment in the subject. I think my strengths would be interacting with students and explaining…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with confidence in themselves to understand and learn new work, such they find an enjoyment for the work they are learning. I believe a tutor should not be someone that a student relies on, but rather someone that a student uses for extra help. I am very patient,…

Being patient and being held accountable for e.g. setting tasks, are 2 crucial elements for effective tutoring. To ensure the student remains positive, motivated and eager to learn, a tutor must also possess these qualities. I am a strong believer in displaying enthusiasm yourself in order for it to rub off onto the student and I know for certain…

A tutor must be able to communicate effectively with a student in order for the student to grasp complex mathematical concepts. Since I was also a student sitting the HSC, I am able to put myself in the student's shoes and thus effectively tackle anything limiting their understanding. In addition, a tutor must be able to identify the…

I think a tutor must be extremely understanding of a students concerns and queries regarding their work. Also, not only must a tutor be well versed in the content, they must also develop ways to explain these concepts to students who have a lack of understanding or no understanding at all, tailored to the needs of that particular individual. I am…

Teaching them the right way to learn. Tutoring is not just teaching them textbook concepts or mathematical formulas, it's about teaching them how to keep practicing. make sure students are comfortable with the tutor. Be compassionate and kind towards the students so they don't feel ashamed of asking questions or admitting they don't understand a concept. Understand the learning level and ability of the student and work around it. Simplify complex concepts and break them down to the student's understanding…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel like they can actually handle the work on their own. It Is easy to just give someone the answers, but that doesn't help them in the long run. Since I'm majoring in psychology, I try to focus on building their confidence and helping them get past that "mental block" where they…

As a kid, if someone came to tutor me, the first thing I would look for was how gentle they were. Am I too scared to talk to them and ask questions, or can I connect with them enough to feel comfortable and see them as a friend I respect? The second thing is that they truly know what they’re teaching. My tutor would always go through all the…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can bring to a student is the ability to be independent in his work (no matter the subject or the field). A tutor is responsible for sharing his knowledge with a student in order for him to be independent and proud of himself when he reflects back on where he started and where he is now. - I have already…

Building confidence and upstanding in students. First, it is essential that a tutor provides support tailored to that student's needs, learning process, and interests. Second, a tutor must approach sessions with patience and understanding, while avoiding negativity and behavior that may discourage their student. Overall, I think creating an environment where a student feels seen and heard by…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to never make them belittle themselves or their knowledge. I believe at some point in every academic career, students will need a little help when they are struggling to keep up, or maybe they want to improve their grades to get into their dream college. And no matter what the situation is, tutor is the best way to get students the help they need when they need it most. A tutor can help to improve a…

A tutor's role in the student's life is to be that of a guide through convoluted passages. This is because the guide is there when the student needs a resource or additional advice in a time of confusion. A tutor can make a huge impact on the future success levels of a student, and because of this reason, I would take this role very seriously. My…

Inside ParkvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Max built confidence with column addition and subtraction, then moved on to identifying odd and even numbers and describing fractions like halves and quarters using visual aids.

Year 5 student Emily practiced long multiplication, including multiplying two-digit numbers, and learned to convert between improper and mixed fractions by representing them on number lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Josh focused on perimeter calculations for composite rectilinear shapes and consolidated understanding of area through grid-based problems before tackling worded questions involving mass and different units.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student struggled to recall subtraction methods and the reasons behind odd/even numbers when put on the spot, as a tutor observed: "she was unable to recall the exact methods of adding and subtracting, and the reason behind concepts of odd and even." This gap showed up especially during in-lesson questions without homework reinforcement.

In Year 7 mathematics, long division remained a stumbling block; confusion persisted after repeated attempts, particularly when switching between strategies or times tables were skipped. Without consistent written practice at home, these foundational processes often faded between lessons—leaving students unsure mid-task or reverting to less effective approaches under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A Parkville tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who, after weeks of hesitation, finally started writing down her own instructions for homework—she used to rely on verbal prompts but now wants reminders she can check herself.

In Year 11 maths, one student who always struggled with worded multiplication and division problems is now independently tackling them using arrays and can explain his reasoning out loud without guessing.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who previously avoided symmetry exercises, surprised the tutor by completing both sides of a symmetry drawing accurately during the session and even asked for an extra challenge.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University High School.
