A tutor's main job is to help re-explaining new concepts and/or help students consolidate new concepts as well as integrating new ones as they are being taught. Therefore, the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to explain new concepts in simple and relatable terms, encourage interests in a particular subject and most…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them truly understand concepts while building their confidence. A good tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning from their mistakes My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and clear…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is creating lesson plans and methods based around that student. The tutor should also never make a student feel dumb or less capable, but instead should show the students that they have the same capabilities as their peers, it may just take other methods, and concepts that they are not getting…

The personalisation of learning is the most important thing I consider a tutor can do for their student. There is no one-size-fits-all study skills as every students have different interests and strengths. Therefore, I believe it is important to truly incorporate their interests and maximise their strengths in tutoring, for the students to build…

A tutor makes a student feel like even though the work is difficult and deadlines are looming, everything will be okay. The tutor acts as a mentor who helps students to improve their time management and study skills, as well as clarifying difficult points. This makes the student feel reassured about their progress through the course. I like to…

I think the best tutor is one who guides the students properly and fairly not only in their academics but also about life challenges. Most importantly a tutor should be ready to explain a single concept even 10 times to students if they are not able to get that without getting annoyed Well , I'm quite patient which I think is my biggest strength…

Being able to help build a students confidence in themselves, but also to teach them how to problem solve and learn. - I am very patient as a tutor - I have studied and tutored for a long time - I can teach concepts in a variety of ways in order to find the way the student learns best - I have an engineering/maths/computer science mindset when…

The most important thing a tutor can do for one of their students is to appear approachable so the student is not afraid to ask questions or for further insight. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not just help with homework and assignments, but build a solid understanding of key concepts and other basics (especially in maths and science) so that the student is equipped with the knowledge and confidence to tackle a wide range of problems on their own. I think one of my…

As a tutor, I believe it is very important to teach and advice on 'how to study' along with concepts. Throughout my undergraduate degree, through friends, my tutors and lecturers, I have learnt many tricks and tips which I love to share with my students making them understand concepts better and build a liking for the subject. I enjoy what I study…

I think a tutor can provide a new lens for the student within the subject. Doing all our learning in the same system, at the same school, helps to create routine, which can be great for lots of students, however, I think a lot of students get disheartened and, especially in developing years, need much more one on one help, being able to create an…

To find a way to explain problems to a student that suits that particular student, as you can explain something to someone for a long time, but they may still be unable to understand it if it isn't presented in a way that is suitable for their learning style. Inside Plympton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Finn practised adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers and worked through word problems involving these operations.

In Year 9, James revised circular motion in Physics—clarifying centripetal force—and reviewed key statistics concepts such as mean, median, and mode using his school test materials.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Una focused on preparing for upcoming assessments by tackling break-even analysis and capital gains calculations in Maths, while also reviewing atomic theory basics in Chemistry.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 8 session, Mavis left her math booklet at home, which meant time was lost re-explaining previously covered concepts.

In Year 11 Chemistry, another struggled to recall technical terms—she could explain ideas but couldn't name them, as in "the reproduce at different times one" instead of 'temporal isolation'.

A senior student avoided answering questions when unsure; this habit led to gaps during practice tests.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student focused only on easy times tables and avoided harder multiplication facts, which slowed progress in mixed-operation problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Plympton Park noticed a real shift for Mavis, who used to hesitate with reading aloud but recently volunteered to read the comprehension text herself and tackled tricky words without prompting—she even asked about unfamiliar terms instead of skipping them.

In Year 11 Chemistry, Una has started catching her own calculation mistakes and correcting them on the spot, which is a big change from needing step-by-step guidance before.

Another high school session saw Chloe independently solving several algebra problems after previously relying on hints for each step; she finished by working through two questions entirely on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Marion Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Forbes Primary School.
