To recognise the student's limits, and to help them reach beyond them. A tutor should set realistic goals for students to help them stay motivated and to make progress in their learning, however, they should also encourage students to achieve higher through effective communication and tutoring support. As the student's needs should be a tutor's…

I think kids need to more than anything feel confident in their ability, and finding the ideal way they learn is ultimately a priority to help them gain that confidence through understanding. Schooling in South Africa was very rigorous so I feel that I have quite a broad base of knowledge and a natural passion for…

A tutor should be more than someone who lectures and instead be someone who brings value through listening and understanding challenges and working through them with the student to find solutions. A tutor can enable a student to understand a subject, not just enough knowledge to pass. A tutor can teach more than just a syllabus, but also learning…

I believe that patience and consideration are the most important things, as it can take very different amounts of time for people to understand concepts that I may have learnt at a faster pace, or that another student learnt faster. Flexibility is also important as everybody learns in a unique way, and what may help one person completely…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. My principle strength as a tutor would be my understanding of how mathematical concepts work, which helps me to explain them. I do this often with my colleagues during…

Rather than teaching a student, the tutor inspires the student. It is vital for a tutor to provide the skills and techniques required to solve complex problems rather than teaching them how to solve these problems. Getting a student excited about learning is also pivotal as this provides a more engaging environment and increases their…

The ultimate goal for a tutor is to help their students grow and provide them with essential skills to their academic. Most importantly, the tutor has to do this in the attitude of a friend who genuinely wishes their student the best because they need to trust the tutor and know that they are there whenever they need them. I help my students to…

I think the purpose of a tutor is to complement and supplement the school classroom learning to ensure that the student has a good understanding of the subject's content, but ultimately a good tutor will develop a student's independent learning ability, and only fill in gaps in a student's knowledge when required. A tutor should guide a student…

There are numerous things a tutor should be able to do. I think providing these students with lessons that pinpoint certain issues and flaws, acknowledging student welfare (such as stress), and ultimately showing (or delivering), that same powerful desire for their students to do well, are only a few things a tutor should provide for a student.…

I think it would be acknowledging the difficulty in subjects to know that they aren't alone with their difficulties and also being able to explain to them the content of their subjects in new ways that makes sense to them. Being able to explain concepts well to a student is arguably the most important thing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. Inside RockleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sam worked through simultaneous equations and expanded brackets, focusing on clear step-by-step solutions.

For Year 11, Ava tackled trigonometric functions including sine and cosine waves using unit circles, as well as converting between degrees and radians.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack concentrated on differentiation rules—specifically the chain rule, quotient rule, and product rule—to strengthen calculus foundations with targeted examples from recent assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student repeatedly lost track of numbers mid-calculation during algebra tasks; as the tutor noted, "numbers would slip out of her head as she was solving problems and she would have to backtrack," which often led to correct concepts but wrong answers.

In a Year 8 session, a student fell back on simply adding or multiplying any given numbers when stuck, instead of working through problem steps—a short-term crutch that limited deeper understanding.

After-school fatigue in a senior student left him freezing up or disengaged at key moments, making it harder to complete multi-step questions under pressure.

Recent Achievements

In a Rocklea tutoring session, Zoe, a high schooler with ADHD and dyscalculia, experimented with colour-coded notes and visual cues—she now finds it easier to interpret complex expressions and even solved cross multiplication problems that previously tripped her up.

Shakya, also in high school, showed a shift from uncertainty to self-reliance; despite being unwell, she completed all her homework independently and applied linear equations to real-world scenarios like GPS signals.

Meanwhile, Rama in Year 5 surprised her tutor by generating creative sentences quickly when prompted—something she'd hesitated with before—and spelling advanced words without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rocklea State School.
