Allow them to learn in a safe environment, where they will always be encouraged. I believe that tutors should be good listeners so as to allow students to approach them with any difficulty they may be facing in the school environment. I will attempt to share with them personal experiences whenever that is possible so as to remove any power…

I feel the most important things a tutor can do is to allow the student to grow in their ability to approach problems/ tasks with less assistance progressively, and to instil confidence in the student, that they can achieve if they put in the effort. I feel my passion to help students is my biggest strength. I take this responsibility very…

It is highly important to provide the student with a support network in which the student feels confident to ask any questions and feels comfortable. I am able to simplify concepts to the point where a student can easily grasp them. I am also quite patient. If a student doesn't initially understand a concept, I am able to not only explain again…

The best thing a tutor could create is confidence in what they are learning in, and to along the way churn a love for learning. If its a high achieving student, tutors will enhance and better extrapolate the students potential, on top of school. If its a struggling child, then a block by block process going through everything should be achieved.…

A tutor can help a student to believe in himself /herself.. A tutor can empower a student to realise that he / she has the resources within himself/ herself to tackle a difficult subject with confidence I have a strong grasp of the subject area being studied. Over many years of teaching I have discovered how students think and how they best…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be someone the student can depend on for sound knowledge of the content. Being a reliable, rational source of information who is able guide their students to effectively learn the content in an engaging but effective way will more often than not end up benefiting the student and help them achieve their goals. Generally…

The most important thing is understanding. A tutor needs to understand that different people learn differently and take a different amount of time to understand. I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing a tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what will come…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to be non-judgemental and to genuinely believe that each and every student will succeed. Although some children might be slower to grasp certain concepts, at the end of the day the most important thing is to encourage them every step of the way. I graduated high school with an ATAR of 94.3,…

A tutor needs to be a strong support for the student. Providing a comfortable environment where the student can discuss and barriers to learning that may be affecting them without the fear of judgement or doubt will enhance the learning experience by many fold. Inside Roxburgh ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Caleb worked on calculating the circumference of circles, solving perimeter problems for complex shapes, and reviewed manual methods for decimal multiplication and division.

Another Year 9 session focused on finding areas of kites and trapeziums, using linear equations to determine unknown lengths, and practicing correct answer presentation.

In a further lesson, Caleb tackled surface area questions involving cylinders—including nets and curved surfaces—using his school textbook in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student faced time management issues during problem-solving in Physics, often spending too long on one part and not leaving enough for the rest—"he lost marks when he didn't check his working on graph questions."

In Year 11 Maths Methods, there was an over-reliance on notes and calculators; when formulas weren't instantly available, progress stalled.

For a Year 8 English essay, feedback suggested that "more depth connecting themes to the story" was needed, but the student didn't take up suggestions from previous drafts.

In Year 4 Maths, incomplete homework on times tables slowed mastery of multiplication facts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Roxburgh Park noticed a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now independently pinpoints her weak spots during sessions and requests targeted feedback, showing new initiative.

In VCE Physics, another student—who once relied on formula sheets for every problem—recently solved momentum and energy questions from memory and articulated his reasoning step by step without prompts.

Meanwhile, a primary student who struggled with the split strategy for multiplication has started tackling two-digit problems unassisted, even finishing her homework's first section with only minor corrections needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh Park Primary School.
