I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning approachable, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions. It’s not just about helping them get the right answers, but about helping them understand the why behind what they’re learning. A good tutor should also…

The most crucial role of a tutor is to avoid skipping steps unless the student fully comprehends the material. Observing problem-solving methods can be helpful, but it's the student's grasp of the logical progression behind solving problems that enables them to excel. I strive to leverage my communication skills and adaptability to discern and…

Beside helping and guiding a student to achieve a bright future, the best a tutor can do is to guide them in the right way. Not in the way tutor wants to but in a way a required by the student because every one is different. And yes, a tutor teaches student and make them the best version of themselves. I understand and observe people more then…

A tutor needs to be the person who can create a proper learning experience so that the students will be active learners and concentrate more on their studies. The most important one is listening to the problems and difficulties of their students and showing them the ways to solve them with proper explanations. Quizzes and tutorials can be used to…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can teach is how to learn. Things like study habits and exam prep techniques can help students immeasurably. My main strength is my thorough understanding of mathematics. Studying subjects like analysis allows me to truly understand the concepts that are being taught to high school students. I also…

Inside Russell ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Remi worked through homework covering multiplication and division, plus rapid-fire practice on fractions and time/calendar questions.

For Year 6, Ava tackled perimeter and area problems alongside exercises in fractions and percentages to build confidence with multi-step maths.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max focused on understanding angles and measurement, using diagrams to visualise different types of angles and how they're calculated.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student recently dodged homework questions and showed reluctance to read set texts outside his preferred genres.

In maths, he often avoided showing working for problems, with one lesson noting, "he believed the answer to be enough by itself." This habit became a barrier in both fractions and algebra revision.

Another high school session saw him rely on spellcheck rather than attempting spelling tasks independently, leading to limited retention.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student struggled to recall times tables out of order and hesitated with mental calculations—sometimes skipping numbers or forgetting subtraction strategies—causing visible frustration during multi-digit problems.

Recent Achievements

One Russell Vale tutoring session saw a Year 9 student, Max, approach his PDHPE test revision with much more initiative—he asked specific questions when unsure, instead of quietly guessing as he would have in earlier lessons.

In Year 7 maths, Arvon became noticeably more vocal about what he wanted to learn and managed to complete all ten numeral value questions correctly when dictated aloud—a big step up from his usual hesitation with mental recall.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who initially struggled to add small numbers now uses finger counting independently and worked through large addition sums without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Russell Vale Public School.
