To recognise that no two students are the same and that a process like learning needs to be personalised so that the best results are achieved. This personalisation also means that its much more likely for the student to open up and fully engage in the process of assisted learning as they can feel that the session is catered just towards their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them believe in themselves. Academic support is important, but confidence is what truly changes everything. When a student feels seen, heard, and supported, they start to trust their own ability to learn and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just explain concepts they create a safe space…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be absolutely encouraging in whatever the student wants to achieve in anything they are learning. It's important because that strongly affects the students drive and perseverance in mastering a certain subject. Being a good mentor and setback to the students on how to be in a society. Educating in the right way, making a person a very good being, developing the children's skill is what I think is the most important thing as a tutor. The best thing a teacher can do to a student is to adapt to student's learning style. I have experienced that every student learn differently, some are visual, some hands-on discussion based and some with stories. A great tutor identifies how each student learns fast and adjust their approach accordingly. I have emotional intelligence to learn…

It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand. Students who are strugglings with certain subjects might not actually be bad at the subjects but rather they might not have had proper guidance from their teachers or they do not have a strong foundation, or they are just not studying in the right method. Each…

I believe be able to help students in study is one important thing. However helping them emotionally and in life could be essential for them. Leave them with a proper process with answering questions under time pressure. Make learning if not enjoyable at least tolerable, as learning new things is much harder if you don’t have any interest in it. Make your teaching digestible for the student depending on their level of understanding - not too easy not too hard. Breaking down complex…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

As a tutor, I think it's important to be there for them. Learning loads of new concepts almost every second day can be overwhelming and with that, all students have their strengths and weaknesses. Thus as a tutor it would be a good measure to know their strengths and weaknesses and work with them through their weaknesses and add them to the list…

To be consoling and confident, so that the student believes in you. Lisa, Seddon

Inside SeddonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mia focused on converting denominators to add and subtract fractions, as well as simplifying fractions for clarity.

In Year 9, Ethan practiced solving algebraic equations for x and reviewed strategies for factorising quadratic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby worked through the distributive law of surds in algebra and reinforced her understanding by graphing linear lines using different methods.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a barrier for one Year 8 student—"not attempted," the note read, which limited progress with dividing and multiplying by factors of ten.

In Year 9 algebra sessions, working out was sometimes kept in students' heads rather than on paper, so key sign errors or steps were missed ("pen to paper" needed).

A senior student brought neither book nor notes to revision, making it harder to practice manipulating equations and use feedback.

One Year 11 learner hesitated to check work after each step; small mistakes went unnoticed until the end, meaning extra time spent fixing avoidable errors.

Recent Achievements

A Seddon tutor noticed that one Year 11 student, after initially struggling with understanding the inflation formula and the difference between purchasing power and current value, began breaking down complex questions independently and set up a personal study log to track his progress—a big shift from needing step-by-step direction.

Another high school student who previously hesitated to ask for help now initiates discussions about challenging algebraic problems and has started keeping organised notes in a dedicated rules book.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often guessed spelling is now confidently rewriting definitions and reading them aloud after targeted literacy practice during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Mechanics' Institute Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Pilgrim Campus.
