Also, a tutor should be someone who understands their students' needs, behaviour, and learning pace, and be flexible in their teaching…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empathise with the student. Understanding the student should be done before everything else. If the tutor and student has established a good relationship then the learning environment will be calm, open, and comfortable. Being the big sister of four wonderful kids with different…

Inside Semaphore SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Maddison discussed her main challenges with division, fractions, and algebra while reviewing Year 9 topics together and creating a plan for future lessons.

For Year 8 Michael, the focus was on improving multiplication and division skills before tackling points on a graph and using the gradient formula.

In Year 10, Sarah recapped coordinate geometry and worked through new concepts like indices and Pythagoras' theorem, using practice questions to reinforce each area.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, a student arrived without any class notes and shared that their teacher gives no quiz feedback or lesson support—leaving them unsure about errors.

Another Year 9 student was unaware of an upcoming quiz, showing gaps in test planning and self-organization.

For a senior maths student, incomplete homework was handed in; the tutor observed, "she didn't use the cheat sheet as a guide," so key revision steps were missed.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly forgot her word list and homework, which meant spelling practice could not be reviewed—her focus drifted, leading to more mistakes during the session.

Recent Achievements

One Semaphore South tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with situational math problems now actively asks her teacher for returned tests and clarifies where she gets stuck, showing more independence in her learning.

Another high schooler began talking herself through problem steps out loud—she didn't do this before—which helped her avoid mistakes during practice and made her reasoning much clearer.

Meanwhile, a younger student brought homework to the session for the first time without prompting and remembered tricky spelling words using new strategies, then spelled every word correctly on her weekly test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Le Fevre High School.
