To find a way to explain problems to a student that suits that particular student, as you can explain something to someone for a long time, but they may still be unable to understand it if it isn't presented in a way that is suitable for their learning style. I think it is also important to be able to answer questions outside of the tutoring time…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand that each student is different. Every student will have different methods of learning and also different abilities in retaining information. It is vital for a tutor to see what the student is understanding and what they are not. Different methods should be placed to ensure the student is…

Patience and understanding. Some of the best teachers I had in were those who would take the time to listen to your question and the answer them with careful detail so that you are able to understand the answer and the concept behind that answer. I believe that one of my strengths as a tutor would be that I was never top of my class. I do believe…

A tutor needs to be patient when tutoring a student especially in subjects like mathematics and physics since those subjects require the most assumed knowledge in high school than any other subject, students normally have trouble recollecting previous works. Therefore, it is important for a tutor to start from the very basic concepts, if the…

A tutor makes a student feel like even though the work is difficult and deadlines are looming, everything will be okay. The tutor acts as a mentor who helps students to improve their time management and study skills, as well as clarifying difficult points. This makes the student feel reassured about their progress through the course. I like to…

Throughout my undergraduate degree, through friends, my tutors and lecturers, I have learnt many tricks and tips which I love to share with my students making them understand concepts better and build a liking for the subject. I enjoy what I study…

In short, making the academic journey simpler and more enjoyable. To do this, I think a tutor should have the ability to: identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the student, build a personalised structured learning plan, build foundational understanding of subjects not just memorisation, break down complex concepts into manageable chunks,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them to understand the topic and not just to help them complete the assignment. It is easy to sit with the student and help them through each step and each problem to complete some assignment, but if they did not understand it then the session was essentially useless for…

Being a tutor, one can do a lot of things for a student apart from teaching. A tutor has the responsibility of mentoring the students in career and general life. The tutor should be empathetic and able to understand the student to provide relevant support. I am a high achiever myself. Being a uni student, I can relate to the students' problems in…

Most important thing i think, from a students perspective, as i am a student my self, would be not to overcomplicate things. Tutors who over complicate simple math conceps just confuse and scare the student more. A simple approach is much more helpful I think as a tutor my strenght would be patiences. Weaknesses would be forgetting then names of…

A tutor's role is to help guide a student through problems to discover the information for themselves, not to simply complete the question and move on. A tutor should also be available to answer any question a student may have, ensuring they understand the content being delivered. Moving at a pace suited to the student while also moving at the…

Inside SkyeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alyssia explored titration calculations in chemistry, working through molar ratios and using formulas like n = m/M and C × V, as well as preparing for her exam with redox reactions and balancing equations.

In Year 10, Ben focused on quadratic equations—completing the square for more challenging problems and reviewing different forms of quadratics in preparation for his upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Jamie revised univariate statistics by practicing calculations of mean, median, mode, range, and was introduced to interquartile range.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student often relied on reusing equation formats and prior solutions rather than reasoning independently through new problems—"he tended to follow the set process instead of thinking about why it works," as noted after algebra practice.

For a Year 12 chemistry session, another student preferred to check previous working before attempting unfamiliar questions, hesitating to push beyond known methods.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student was easily distracted during sessions and lacked a clear plan for what to focus on, which meant less time spent engaging with key tasks. This sometimes led to confusion or slow progress when faced with multi-step worded problems.

Recent Achievements

Alyssia started the session needing help with titration equations but finished able to solve mixed molar ratio problems independently, no longer waiting for hints before starting.

Alessandro, in Year 10 Maths, arrived fully prepared with specific questions and by the end was confidently linking roots and graphing cubics—something he'd previously found confusing.

Meanwhile, Lucy in Year 7 has moved from relying on prior examples to tackling new statistics questions on her own after just a bit of guidance, showing real initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Magill School.
