Motivate them to study. A lot of the times the students are more than capable to achieve good grades but they just struggle with motivation to study, hence the first thing i do is motivate them to study. Being able to explain almost everything in the simplest of steps so that anyone can understand complex topics easily. Also giving my students…

I think the most important aspect of being a responsible and helpful tutor is being patient with the student. Every student has a different understanding ability so being patient and explaining the task clearly to the student is very important. I believe I can understand each student's weakness and strength, understanding their psychology and…

Effective teaching of a student to me involves two fundamental aspects, this is; development of key fundamental concepts and knowledge, and maturing a student's perspective of their learning through evolving of their own self-confidence and faith in themselves. This is achieved through establishing of comfortability as a teacher to develop…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is to create a safe, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Beyond that, it’s essential to tailor explanations to match the student’s learning pace and style, helping them not just learn but understand deeply. Finally, fostering a…

a tutor must strive to find what a student lack and try to complement it. For example , a slacking student , in most cases, might be just lacking vision for his future. A tutor must guide him towards setting targets for himself. I am able to identify learning styles of…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are being an attentive and listening mentor, ready to help with any issues. As a tutor, I think being able to shape and mould your lessons around the needs of the student is also a very important skill, and in doing so they can help the student achieve their goals. I think some of my…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them feel more confident in entering exams and answering questions. One major obstacle students face is not being sure whether they are 'smart enough' for an exam, and I aspire to improve my student's confidence and help them understand how to answer questions :) I…

I think the most important thing for a tutor to do is to continue to provide ongoing support for its student. The tutor needs to help the student through their educational journey by providing extensive resources for their students in order for them to grow to become successful students. Help the student progress, a tutor shouldn't be a nanny but rather a coach. A tutor should be someone who shows the horse where the water sources, which is/are the best one(s) and how to best drink from them rather than someone who takes a horse to a water source and makes that horse drink from it. I think that I can explain well and am…

With my personal experience and from what I have seen with friends, a tutor increasing a student's marks is only about 30% of the true benefit. What really changes, is your whole approach to learning. To be frank, I used be to near the bottom rank for math at my school, roughly 90/125. After going tutoring and experiencing success for the first…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is being able to answer any question a student throws at them. A student in high school/primary school will be extremely curious and self-driven, which is exactly why being able to answer any type of question, whether it be homework, school or even life advice, is extremely important as a…

Helping them study for themselves. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop their own passions and goals for studying and learning, that way it helps build healthy habits and achieves far better results in my experience than rote learning a,d teaching them memorisation. I'm good at explaining abstract…

A few of the important things a tutor can do for a student is to care, understand and support. Although a tutor may have an incredible breadth of knowledge, it is the way that they deliver this knowledge that is key. Firstly, they need to care and understand the student's level and ability to learn and process information. As much as delivering…

Inside South TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sam worked through probability, focusing on basic chance experiments and interpreting results from tables.

In Year 10, Grace practised trigonometric graph sketching and applied the binomial theorem to expansion problems using structured examples.

For Year 12, Daniel revised calculus applications such as differentiation of exponentials and tackled financial maths questions involving compound interest, reviewing past paper questions for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits stood out across year levels.

In Year 11 calculus, one student often left revision exercises incomplete and didn't revisit assigned practice, making it hard to retain differentiation methods—"he is also not going back and doing revision exercises that are assigned to him."

Another, working on advanced algebra in Year 10, regularly struggled to start multi-step problems without hints, which slowed progress on unfamiliar application questions.

During a Year 12 statistics lesson, skipping written steps in probability led to errors with CDF and PDF relationships; this meant extra time was spent retracing calculations instead of tackling new material.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Turramurra noticed that one Year 12 student, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now regularly speaks up when stuck on tricky calculus questions and seeks feedback to double-check his approach.

Another high schooler has shifted from needing step-by-step guidance in coordinate geometry to tackling most problems independently and even choosing harder challenge questions during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently began outlining proofs unaided in class—something he'd struggled with just a week before—and completed the session by successfully presenting his reasoning without prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra Public School.
