The most important thing is that the tutor can understand the students' learning process. Thus, the tutor can improve how they acquire knowledge and boost their learning in a proper way My strength is my love for science and biology which encourages each student to see science in the same way. I like that each student tries to understand the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is identify the areas that the student struggles with and targeting those areas during the sessions. My strength is breaking down concepts into little parts so it does not seem as daunting while simultaneously asking them simple questions that leads to the answer to help them build up their…

To help them feel better. There are a lot of children who are scared of a subject or who always say „I‘m just not good at it“ and I want them to be able to say „Yeah, I understand it“ and feel better and more confident in the subject I am very patient and creative so I know many ways to explain one thing so that the individual child can…

Boosting their confidence in tackling problems they were once fearful of and guiding them to develop more holistically. I strongly believe that tutors should also make an effort to really understand their students deeply so as to help draw out and maximise their potential. I believe that every student has the ability to score As in their…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is the willingness of a tutor to support these students in their studies by giving them ongoing assistance and feedback, but also being able to help them with any personal issues/troubles they are having. This translates to being a friendly and approachable tutor, much like a friend…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build the student’s confidence, and help them develop independent learning skills. From my experience mentoring in High school, I saw how crucial it is to tailor support to each student’s needs, not just focusing on grades but also mindset. A good tutor…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence as well as academic understanding. The most important thing I can do for a student is build their confidence in their learning. Additionally, I will provide the necessary tools for a student to carry on to their further studies. If you're a…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

Especially for younger students, I believe that it is important to not only teach the subject, but to lead by example to influence the children to adopt good values such as kindness, patience and tenacity. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
