A tutor should be able to provide clarity in moments of doubt and confusion. Encourage practice and definitely believe in the student. Studying should be made interesting and not one sided as it can turn out to be really fun. I am extremely patient and organized. I believe that every child is unique. But as they grow older, their creative confidence is lost. Everything can be transformed if we can transform the brain and recreate those neural connections which will bring back creative intuition in your life. I try to curate experiential transformation learning in my teachings to bring back creative…

One important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure communicating in a manner that motivates the student and makes them feel confident in the content they are learning. This could be by starting off with easier practice and gradually testing more of the student's abilities. This way, the student is able to warm-up with do-able questions…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to identify the areas of strengths and weaknesses in a student and help them to improve. Another crucial thing is to build a rapport with the students so that a tutor can get to know the students and their learning styles to be able to plan a lesson effectively.…

A tutor plays a pretty significant role in a student's life. As a tutor, I can try my best to impart as much knowledge as I can to my students. I can provide them with the best of my capabilities right from being punctual, right on time and not only completing the course but also offering a good number of revisions. My strengths as a tutor are as…

To be patient enough to see results. Lesson plannings are crucial for students to understand the flow of their subjects. I believe I am…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make studying not feel like a boring task. The more fun a class is, the more likely it is that the student will put in extra effort in the subject. Give their time in order to further assist the student and go the extra mile instead of doing just enough. This can heavily impact the student's learning experience as they know that there is someone willing to help them improve. I believe that there shouldn't be overworking the student but the student shouldn't be too relaxed when working. This…

Tutors should check for understanding as they go and constantly build confidence so that the student feels like their abilities are improving. When a student feels confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Their curiosity is ignited, and they are more likely to ask questions in class and read additional texts about things that interest them.…

Tutors must prepare for teaching prior to the session. Briefly revising a topic that the tutor may have not covered in a couple of years will allow the tutor to spend more quality teaching time with the student. A tutor must also be responsive. If a student is contacting their tutor with a question, even if its outside of the specified teaching…

Inside St Kilda WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Matthew worked on adding, multiplying, and dividing fractions as well as converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 9, Amisha tackled trigonometry by combining bearings with SOHCAHTOA and also reviewed statistics.

For Year 12, Will focused on advanced essay writing for English by refining comparative analysis of Tracks and Into the Wild and developing language analysis skills through rewriting flagged sections based on teacher feedback.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4 maths, incomplete memorization of multiplication tables repeatedly disrupted progress with fractions and long division; "she still has trouble with her 7, 8 and 9 times tables," noted one tutor, leading to confusion when simplifying or comparing values.

For a Year 10 English student, unfinished homework and unclear communication—such as bringing work mostly finished instead of submitting it in advance—meant less targeted feedback during sessions.

At the senior level (Years 11–12), missed practice questions and only reviewing notes (rather than tackling exam-style problems) left conceptual gaps in Physics, making it harder to solve complex problems under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in St Kilda West noticed one Year 10 student who previously rushed through probability questions now pausing to identify outliers before calculating answers—she's actively double-checking her thinking, which is a big shift from earlier sessions.

In senior maths, Matthew has started explaining his reasoning out loud while tackling tricky proof problems; last week he worked through a complex induction question with much less prompting than before.

Meanwhile, Will (Year 12 English) recently began emailing his essay plans for feedback ahead of time instead of waiting for reminders, showing more self-management and initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Middle Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Kilda Park Primary School.
