Tutor Newcastle, NSW
I think it's important to listen and observe, find out how a student learns, how they go about working on a problem, then use these observations to construct a way to better their understanding of the material. I'm an easy going guy, I try not to stress people out. I am able to understand and simplify Mathematics in a way that's easier to…

Inside StocktonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Isla practised division and multiplication using short tests and quick mental strategies.

In Year 9, James focused on algebraic equations and simultaneous equations, breaking down worded problems into step-by-step solutions.

For Year 11, Sophie worked through financial mathematics topics including shares, dividend yield, and depreciation, tackling both introductory examples and more challenging application questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in financial maths showed a strong reliance on plugging numbers into formulas, often missing the underlying context of worded problems. As one tutor noted, "she is too reliant on putting numbers into a given formula," which made it difficult for her to adapt when unfamiliar question types appeared.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's working out was frequently messy and poorly ordered—her calculations for distance, speed, and time were written without structure, making errors harder to catch or correct.

In senior years, another student hesitated with abstract algebra questions; "I don't know" would come quickly before giving herself time to think. This tendency led her to avoid challenging tasks and limited deeper understanding, especially under test pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Stockton tutor noticed Danika begin to organise her notes each week and actively identify questions she didn't understand—a shift from when she'd hesitate to speak up about tricky topics.

Another win came from Liz, who recently tackled challenging financial maths exam problems by explaining her reasoning out loud, even teaching the tutor how she arrived at certain answers—showing a real leap in both independence and depth of understanding.

In Year 6, Lara started using new study plans for upcoming assessments and successfully completed a practice test on her own, scoring 22 out of 25.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stockton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's Primary School.
