I think I'm good at explaining things in a fun and easier way that it can suit any kind of student. I can help students motivated to learn something they are not comfortable…

Understand that every student’s learning capabilities vary so being able to be patient whilst explaining concepts is an important factor. If one way of explaining something does not work then problem solving and figuring out another explanation is crucial to the success of a student’s learning. Patience and the ability to deconstruct problems…

Tutors offer a unique opportunity outside of normal school for a student to receive help that is personally tailored for them, which is especially crucial when a student is struggling, to provide specialised support to help them catch up and do their best. Tutors are also useful when offering an alternative way to learn difficult material when the…

The most important role as a tutor is to give students confidence in their knowledge and ability. In my personal opinion, objectively high grades (e.g. 80% or more) should not be placed with as high importance as most people tend to do. I believe that if a student understands the content on a level that allows them to make connections or provide…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence while helping them understand concepts clearly. It’s not just about completing homework, but making sure the student feels comfortable asking questions and is not afraid of making mistakes. A tutor should also be able to identify where a student is struggling…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil a strong sense and desire for constant learning and improvement. This growth mindset and perseverance that tutors can help establish for their students can be translated to other areas of their lives outside of academics. While learning and performing in school may be…

When tutors focus on goal setting, creating benchmarks and planning backwards, this sets students up for academic progress. From my side, I think the most important thing a teacher can do is help students believe in their abilities if they are good at something, and guide them to improve through regular practice. Also, a teacher should try their best so that no student has to suppress their talents, and instead gets the support and encouragement to develop them. My…

A tutor does have that life-changing influence on students so a tutor should be a role model to inspire and manufacture that passion for learning in the students. I believe the most integral part of tutoring is to find the best ways your particular student can learn and understand. Once this is achieved, all the other aspects like explaining the content and going through exercises will fall into place more easily. When you know how your student learns best, they will be able to apply those methods…

For me, the two most vital things a tutor can do are to make learning stick and make it last. To make it stick, I focus on practical application. I bridge the gap between textbook theory and the real world, which makes the information tangible and easier to comprehend. To make it last, I focus on building the skills for continuous,…

I think besides helping a student with his/her academics, a tutor can act as a role model for him/her or someone he/she can look up to. A tutor can not only provide academic assistance but also can broadens a student's outlook in many ways by sharing with him/her many stories, news and also giving an idea about manners and ethics as well. The most…

Inside SunshineTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Vincent focused on area, volume, percentages, ratios, and mixed numbers in maths homework review, while also practising reading comprehension and grammar in English.

For Year 10 Arshdeep, the lesson addressed motion on an inclined plane by breaking down gravity into components and calculating net force, as well as exploring the role of tension and drag forces using diagrams.

In Year 12 Chemistry with Ruby, revision included balancing ionic equations, identifying functional groups such as alkanes and alkenes, and applying mole calculations to empirical and molecular formulae.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student arrived for Chemistry without their class notes or materials, which made it harder to address gaps in ionic equations and electron configuration—he had significant gaps that will require further study.

In Year 8 Maths, one learner's workbook was disorganised and missing homework, so practice with fractions and column addition could not be checked.

A VCE student tackling comparative essays sometimes avoided using feedback on structure, leading to repeated confusion over evidence selection.

During a senior Methods session, rushing through complex number problems led to overlooked details; time was lost fixing these instead of moving ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Sunshine tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 physics student who, after weeks of staying quiet, finally started asking for help with concepts like time dilation—he now explains his reasoning out loud instead of guessing.

Another high school student working on comparative essays initially struggled to plan ideas but recently began mapping out argument structures independently, which is new for her.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to avoid reading tasks volunteered to read the next chapter aloud during their session and tackled unfamiliar words by sounding them out without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception School.
