Firstly, tutors can guide the students in their learning and boost their knowledge in areas that they are not confident in or have fallen behind from school. Tutors enhance the student's academic ability so they can perform at their best. Secondly, tutors have the power to motivate and encourage students to keep working hard and not to give up,…

I also think it is important for a tutor to be personable and a confident communicator in order to make the students feel comfortable working with them. The most important things a tutor can do for their student, in my opinion, are to be flexible and honest in their tutoring methods, ready and flexible in modifying and enhancing the educational experience by bringing necessary equipment, and understanding, advising, and encouraging a student to build upon the key skills they already possess to…

To be fully supportive of the student, to fully listen and understand what they desire to achieve from tutoring, whether that be to excel or for additional support, and to always be patient while they learn. My patience and understanding are strengths, along with being able to explain in alternative ways if an individual does not fully understand…

Everybody learns differently, and trying to apply the same approach to everyone is going to leave students struggling and frustrated. I adapt my teaching style to the way a student learns, and don't enforce a certain way of thinking - instead, I equip them with the tools to approach any problem in a way that works for them. I have two years'…

It is important for a student and a teacher to have a respectful and fun relationship as I believe this makes the learning process not only fun for the student but easier and comfortable. I believe students become enthusiastic and look forward to learning. Being able to adapt to different personalities and learning styles of the student. I think…

It is highly important to provide the student with a support network in which the student feels confident to ask any questions and feels comfortable. I am able to simplify concepts to the point where a student can easily grasp them. I am also quite patient. If a student doesn't initially understand a concept, I am able to not only explain again…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide a positive and healthy learning environment. A tutor should also be able to help a student reach his or her academic potential. I am a very understanding and patient individual. I believe, the best things a tutor can do for a student is to personalise lessons to fit the learning style of each student, help them identify their strengths and teach to their strengths. In addition, it is important for a tutor to listen and communicate often with parents – successful tutors create individualized learning plans with their…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be someone the student can depend on for sound knowledge of the content. Being a reliable, rational source of information who is able guide their students to effectively learn the content in an engaging but effective way will more often than not end up benefiting the student and help them achieve their goals. Generally…

Inside ThomastownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava worked on understanding decimals and completed a diagnostic assessment to target key numeracy skills.

In Year 9, Daniel practiced solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, focusing on revision questions from classwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored the surface area and volume of spheres and cones through targeted practice for her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to keep up with assigned homework, often leaving set problems unfinished—this made it harder for her to feel prepared before upcoming assessments.

In a Year 10 lesson, one student's maths notes were messy and skipped key steps, so when sign errors appeared in algebra, they weren't easy to spot or correct ("she needs to work on signs").

For a younger student in Year 6, reluctance crept in during long-division practice; she grew frustrated and started taking shortcuts on drawings instead of setting out her working fully. That shortfall meant feedback couldn't be used as effectively the next time around.

Recent Achievements

One Thomastown tutor noticed a big shift in Priya's approach to her maths sessions—she now asks questions when stuck, instead of staying silent, which is a real change from earlier lessons.

In Year 10, Bianca recently began preparing her own set of questions before class and worked through equations independently for the first time using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Sophie (Year 5) showed persistence with her times tables: last week she took her time to double-check each answer and managed all 20 correctly without rushing, a clear improvement from when speed led to careless mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thomastown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thomastown Primary School.
