I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide support for their learning. Not only through academic support but also encouraging them to pursue their goals and aspirations. I believe as a tutor it is important to help students follow their dreams. The most important thing a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It's crucial to not only help students understand the material but also to build their confidence and show them that they are capable of solving problems on their own. Providing the right level of…

A tutor should be able to help overcome challenges the student is facing in a manner that is comfortable for the student. Additionally, the tutor should set strategies and goals to ensure that challenge is overcome efficiently and nothing is forgotten. The tutor should also be an aid to the parents to ensure they are happy with progress. Overall,…

The most important things for tutors to do is to support, guide and teach a student. It is important for a tutor to help students learn life skills as well as how to do their given subject. Above all, it is crucical for a tutor to help a student help themselves. As the saying goes 'give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll…

As a tutor, it is very important to be a source of encouragement for each student equally and make them believe in themselves to be successful(success-as defined by each person and not according to the standards of the general public). I also believe it is important to acknowledge the effort of each child, appreciate them where it is…

The most important thing a tutor can do is recognise the strengths in each particular child and help them to grow as the fine individual they are. It is super important that a tutor does not try and make the child someone they are not. I am a highly persistent and can easily pick up on how a child learns and develops in their own unique way. I am…

A tutor should illuminate the skills, information and methodology on which academic excellence is predicated, thus enabling students to undertake work with confidence and awareness. The communication of this guidance -- and the guidance itself -- should be tailored to the individual's own needs. I am perceptive, patient, and good at articulating…

A tutor should help a student foremost achieve the specific academic goals that they wish to attain; but the way in which they should do this is by inspiring a love of learning in the student. By achieving this dual function, you are more likely to attain success for short term results as well as success for the entirety of their academic careers.…

The number one most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure that the student builds a strong understanding of the content. There is a difference between knowing how to work out a problem, and why a problem is solved the way it is. I think that when you understand the why instead of just how it becomes very simple to complete…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can for a student is to lead them on a path so that they might discover the answer themselves, and not give them the answer straight out. Inside Trott ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Ella practised finding the equation of a line given two points and worked through graphing linear equations, including interpreting worded problems.

Year 11 student Ryan reviewed logarithms and exponent rules, then applied them to model bacterial population growth using exponential functions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sarah focused on hypothesis testing with confidence intervals and critical values, as well as integrating probability density functions to solve normal distribution questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student working on rearranging algebraic equations often became confused when negative numbers were involved; as a tutor noted, "he was missing steps in his working, which made it hard to find where the sign error occurred."

In Year 11, forgetting or misplacing key reference materials (such as a 'mini-theorems' book) meant extra time was spent searching for information instead of practicing.

For one Year 12 investigation task, there was hesitation to label graphs and include all required details—resulting in lost marks despite strong conceptual understanding.

When interpreting worded problems in Years 8 and 10, unclear written steps made checking answers more difficult.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Trott Park noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student, who had previously struggled to interpret worded questions but now confidently finds equations of lines from two points without prompting.

In a recent senior session, a Year 12 student—who often hesitated when tackling differentiation—was able to independently construct sign diagrams and work through derivative problems after some guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner moved from confusion about fractions and decimals to accurately explaining their connection to percentages.

Last week, another high schooler received an A- on his statistics test after weeks of working through expected value questions together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hallett Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Woodend Primary School.
