I believe the most important thing is to have a routine, be reliable, and to have the student be a part of every decision in their learning. My time with a student is not about a test or exam. It is about creating the skills for a student to be able to improve as they move through school and beyond. This is something that is going to be…

The most important thing a tutor could do is create a safe environment for the student. Learning can be more comprehensive and explicit once the student is comfortable around their tutor’s presence. The tutor also must maintain and adhere to an elaborate study plan to help the student. I am very patient and would never snap even on being asked…

Inside TuggerahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jayden worked through calculating speed, time and distance as well as rearranging formulas using practical examples.

For Year 8, Ruby focused on rearranging equations and tackling indices alongside adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan practised graphing directly proportional relationships and explored the use of simultaneous equations to solve algebraic problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student frequently confused indices with multiplication and struggled to retain key steps after practice—"he tends to forget the steps after eagerly doing them." Written work was sometimes unclear, making errors harder to spot.

For a Year 11 algebra session, notes highlighted that modules were left incomplete before tutoring, limiting revision time for upcoming tests.

Meanwhile, in upper primary maths, forgetting to complete assigned homework on fractions meant less progress during sessions.

During a senior session on simultaneous equations, missed opportunities to act on tutor feedback led to repeated mistakes rather than deeper understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Tuggerah noticed a big shift with one high school student who used to get frustrated by mistakes, but now works through tough algebra without giving up—he even cleaned up his factorisation and takes real pride in showing his working.

Another high schooler, Frankie, has started making up her own maths examples and openly asks questions whenever unsure, instead of sitting quietly as she did before.

In primary sessions, Ruby recently surprised her tutor by using what she'd learned about higher times tables to figure out new ones on her own and then explained how division is the opposite of multiplication.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Tuggerah Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's Catholic College.
