Ensuring your student is feeling comfortable and confident to try new things is paramount. A student needs to understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process. They need to feel safe and comfortable to make mistakes. I also try to incorporate the interests of a student into learning where possible. E.g. turning a math problem…

This will also…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

I consider encouragement, feedback and trust to be an important part of tutoring. The teacher should support the learner to become more confident in their own academic capabilities, giving them timely and accurate feedback. Also, it is just as important to build positive relationships with your students so they can come to you with their problems…

Inside TullamarineTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Adam focused on distinguishing between prime and composite numbers and converting percentages to decimals, while also practising how to change mixed numbers into improper fractions.

In Year 8, Jasmine worked through simplifying algebraic expressions and factorisation, then solved linear equations with real examples.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lucas tackled problems involving the area and circumference of circles as well as applying the formula for the area of a trapezium using step-by-step calculations.

Recent Challenges

Homework was left incomplete across several year levels.

In Year 7, an algebraic expressions task and a linear equation worksheet were not finished; the tutor noted, "he attempted only half of the assigned problems before moving on."

A Year 8 student working on factorisation also submitted partial work, often skipping written steps when solutions got tricky.

Messy or unstructured working made it hard to spot calculation errors in Year 6 fraction exercises—scratchings crowded margins, making review difficult.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 3 multiplication tended to rely on oral answers rather than writing out full tables, which led to gaps during class revision.

Recent Achievements

One Tullamarine tutor noticed a big change in Bella (Year 4), who used to need step-by-step support with subtraction but now tackles problems with borrowing by herself.

In Year 7 maths, a student who'd been hesitant about algebra is completing textbook exercises independently on representing variables and simplifying expressions—last week they even finished most of their yearly exam corrections without prompting.

Meanwhile, a high school art student has started experimenting with digital photo manipulation for their project after initially struggling to find inspiration; this week, they produced an unexpected new look using Photoshop's pen tool and gradient map.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladstone Park Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tullamarine Primary School.
