Be considerate, patient, understanding, and non-judgemental. It can be very hard to accept help in the first place, and being made to feel like you're failing or a burden is only going to make that harder. I work to understand how their mind works so I can explain in a way they will best understand. I am also very patient, particularly with those…

Tutors should not be someone that a student can rely on to complete homework or assessments for them. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to help them help themselves through assistance and guidance, teaching them the know how of becoming an independent learner so that the student is able to achieve at their own pace. I am…

Build their confidence and show them that they can exprience success. So many students who struggle think something is wrong with them, however some students just need more time to learn and more practise with certain concepts. Showing many ways to work out answers and to learn is important too because no two students are the same. I am…

There are many important things that can be listed but my top things would be building confidence and promoting independence and understanding. A tutor should create a safe, supportive space where mistakes are okay and effort is celebrated. I am highly patient and try to break concepts down into simpler terms and action steps. I’ll never get…

Inside TullimbarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily focused on multiplication facts and worked through multi-step addition and subtraction problems, including friends of 10.

In Year 9, Sam tackled trigonometry applications involving angle of elevation and depression by drawing diagrams and solving using trig ratios, as well as compound interest calculations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Laaibah completed revision on critical path analysis—drawing network diagrams from activity tables and identifying the critical path—along with practicing forward scanning (EST) and backward scanning techniques.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working through HSC-level finance and networks tasks often skipped writing out full solutions—she needs to show more working out in answers, noted a tutor after tackling Best Buys and share questions.

In these multi-mark problems, not showing calculations made it hard to pinpoint where errors crept in, especially under test conditions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student relied on guessing when stuck with multiplication or subtraction; her tutor observed that she does not have the enthusiasm to improve her math solving ability and resisted reading questions aloud or writing steps.

This led to frequent mistakes and mounting frustration during basic arithmetic practice.

Recent Achievements

One Tullimbar tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who used to skip working out, but now regularly writes each step when simplifying ratios and solving finance questions—she even tackled credit card statements on her own.

A Year 8 student, previously hesitant to attempt unfamiliar trigonometry problems, surprised the tutor last session by correctly identifying which trig ratio to use without any prompting.

Meanwhile, in Year 3, Ariana had always struggled with her times tables, but after practicing new multiplication tricks with flashcards, she quickly multiplied larger numbers during the lesson and volunteered to try dividing next.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albion Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tullimbar Public School.
