Teach them how to think for themselves and how to be critical of any situation so that they may find answers on their own. Teach them that values are more important than success in life. Educate them to be all-rounders. Give them hope, encourage them and not allow failure to bring them down lest they may falter into the wrong path. I was…

A Tutor is there to unlock the potential of a student hidden in a big classroom setting. The direct help provided prompts questions and higher order thinking to benefit the student. However it's not only this but the precedent the Tutor sets for a student's study habits. A Tutor exposes the student to a wider perspective on the subject which aids…

When teaching the student, it is important to go through the lesson and make sure the student understands the lesson before commencing with the assignment. It is out job to…

Advice in any way shape or form, may it be intellectual advice or emotional advice. Students seek tutors in order to feel more confident about their school work and it is only through the aforementioned advice that you can successfully tutor a student. I would like to think that my strengths are relationship building and empathy via communication…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student find their particular learning style, study habits and exam technique. There are multiple ways to view the same problem, and each person finds some easier to understand than others. The best thing a tutor can do is provide as many different ways of understanding and interpreting the…

Giving motivation, goals and direction. I always loved tutors who could give me a purpose to life on top of knowledge of school content. I've always been in the tutoring scene back when I was in primary and all throughout high school. I know what kids want in a tutor and I will try my best to meet them. I have exceptional interpersonal skills and…

I can be very perceptive, this allows me to identify a students needs. I often do the questions myself in order to understand the line of reasoning required and the line of reasoning used by the…

I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. I know I am good at interacting with my students,…

The most important things for a tutor is to be a source of support that they can reach out to, not only in the specific subject that they're tutoring, but also studying and school life in general. I think that communication and being on the same page (figuratively) as your student as very important. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to approach problems and questions on their own, such that they are not dependent on anyone when they encounter a difficult problem in the future. For example, to teach them how to look at a problem in many different ways, to reverse the problem and work…

The most vital thing for a tutor is to assess the level of understanding of the student. Students learn in different ways (some learn best with visual explanations, some learn by analogy, or by pnemonic devices etc) and it is important to understand the best approach for a specific student. By applying the most appropriate teaching techniques for…

In the short term, it is important to help the student develop an understanding of the ideas behind a topic, rather than just knowing the content. Inside TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack focused on consolidating subtraction and division, identifying these as areas for extra support while building confidence through arithmetic practice.

Year 10 Amy spent time reviewing a recent math test—clarifying mistakes in functions, probability, and integration—and then refined her comparative Module A English essay by strengthening structure and key paragraph elements.

For Year 11 student Lucas, the lesson centred on tackling probability trees and conditional probability before moving to advanced calculus concepts like interpreting first and second derivatives, using worked examples to target exam weaknesses.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, one student tended to feel overwhelmed by multi-step trigonometry and geometric series problems, which led to difficulty expressing solutions algebraically.

A tutor observed, "She gets stuck when questions are wordy and can't always break them into manageable steps."

In Year 9 English, responses sometimes lacked flow and coherence between sentences within a paragraph, making arguments less persuasive under timed conditions.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student often left out working in division or fractions—resulting in repeated calculations when errors arose mid-solution. The result: time lost retracing steps instead of building confidence with new material.

Recent Achievements

One Turramurra tutor recently noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with logarithms—this week, he not only understood and applied the laws of logs but also spotted and fixed his own errors without prompting.

Another high schooler who used to get stuck on function questions began connecting first and second derivatives to the original graph's behaviour, showing real independence in tackling integration as well.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student made the leap from guessing at word problems to confidently breaking them down and forming equations, finishing all his mental calculation tasks on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northside Montessori School.
