What do I enjoy most about tutoring? π
In high school, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the classroom. Learning new things and connecting them to experiences around me is something I always found fascinating. Mathematics is dreaded by many learners and I believe it should be taught in a way where students should not feel the burden of memorising a list of formulae and solving a set of questions utilising them. Rather, mathematics should be used as a basis for thinking, mathematical thinking. By becoming a tutor, I hope to help learners overcome their fear of mathematics and embrace its beauty.
My Strengths as Tutor πͺ
Three qualities that I believe are my strengths as a tutor are curiosity, patience and optimism. As social individuals, we must keep learning new things, exploring and reshaping the world for the better. However, learning requires patience, as failure or hurdles in the learning process are inevitable. The same applies to propagating knowledge since learners cannot be expected to master a whole concept without facing troubles. Finally, being optimistic is essential as the greatest of achievements cannot be done in one night and requires hard work.
Most important things I can do for a student π
A quality, which I believe tutors should give their students is confidence. The key to mastering any formula or topic is being confident enough to put oneself forward and try it. After all, we cannot find out their strengths or weaknesses without giving a question a shot. A tutor can improve their studentβs confidence through repeated practice, positive motivation and giving incentives upon successfully completing an assessment. Confidence can also be inculcated through innovative teaching techniques such as project-based or visual learning which helps students understand a concept better.
