What do I enjoy most about tutoring? đ
One of the things I really enjoy about tutoring is searching for various methods to teach a concept to a student. Each person visualises, understands and absorbs information differently, and often the differentiating factor between a suitable and unsuitable tutor for a certain student is whether the tutor is able to explain things in a way that particular student can grasp. For me, the search to find the optimum explanation for each individual is stimulating and seeing the moment a student grasps a concept that has been difficult for them to understand till then, is extremely rewarding.
My Strengths as Tutor đŞ
My strengths as a tutor is my ability to understand and accept what the studentsâ concerns are, and the emphasis I have on teaching âwhyâ and not just âhowâ. Being a student, I understand how it feels to have a very important question but hesitating to ask the tutor because it feels âdumbâ to ask. As a tutor I am very conscious of how I make students feel and ensure that they feel free to ask me anything . Furthermore, I believe it is vital to know why something is being done, as this is what encourages problem solving and critical thinking when questions shift to application type questions.
Most important things I can do for a student đ
As a tutor, I believe it is crucial to understand the exact knowledge gap a student may have and helping them by clarifying the root of their doubt. I did Methods and Specialist ATAR, and the roots of my doubts went to the basics - I think the fundamental area to work on for success is proficiency in the basics, which ensures any advancement from that can be tackled by the student, and this is also why I want to tutor year 7 - 10 students. Another crucial aspect I believe is make sure a tutor is not robotic, and approaches each student as a different individual with different needs.

Piper picked up the parallel lines work quite well once the concepts were explained. She was able to recognise the patterns in the questions and apply the correct angle relationships to similar problems. She was also comfortable with the measures of centre and spread when we revised them.
There are still a number of areas from the test content where Piper needs to strengthen her understanding of the basics. She can generally do the questions well once a concept has been explained, but she currently needs support identifying what method to use when she has not seen the question before. With her test next week, it is important that she gets as much exposure to the different question types as possible.

Piper remembered most of the angle patterns from last week and was generally able to identify which relationships to use. She also picked up the algebra component well once it was explained and was able to apply it to the angle questions. We also worked through the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals and clarified the key geometric conventions she needs to know.
Piper could often recognise the angle relationship but was still unsure of the formal name of each angle rule. This is important for questions where she needs to explain or justify her answer, so she needs to be familiar with both the pattern and its name. With the test tomorrow, we focused on making sure she was familiar with the main question types and knew how to approach them.

Lara was quite confident with the questions and was able to apply the methods well. She worked through the problems accurately and understood how to approach the different types of questions.
There were no major concerns with today's work. The main focus will be continuing to challenge Lara with different application-style questions so she is comfortable when the information is presented in less familiar ways.

Lara has a good understanding of the content and was able to use the correct methods for most questions. By the end of the lesson, she was feeling much more confident with the harder application questions. We also went through some strategies for rechecking her answers during the test.
Lara sometimes found it difficult to understand the practical side of application questions, particularly when the maths was presented in an unfamiliar context. She also made a few avoidable calculation and reading errors. Being more careful when reading the question and taking a moment to recheck her answer should help prevent these mistakes in the test.
