What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
With my experience tutoring younger family members, one of the most satisfying feelings in general is seeing the students' ongoing improvement throughout your tutoring. The improvements in grades can be very incremental, but as long as the students learn that with a little bit of focus they can improve and achieve the goals they put their mind towards and that mind set is important far outside of mathematics or sciences. Being able to show younger students that is what I find most enjoyable.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I have strong problem solving skills which I think contributes to how well I can explain certain concepts to students. Given enough time I can generally think of multiple ways to approach the same problem which I find is very helpful as different students engage with the same concepts and topics differently. I am patient and I will always make sure that students fully understand how the problem works before moving on.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Be adaptable. Everyone learns differently and it is the tutor's job to be able to work with the different learning styles. I find that this is the most challenging to get the grasp of as it varies widely across all sorts of students, however, once a tutor learns how a student processes different problems and is able to cater their explanations; that is when tutoring yields the most improvement.

Stephen understands what he needs to do with this task relatively clearly. He's got a good start on what he is supposed to do and together in class we've developed a solid framework of examples that he can use to replicate for other parts of the assignment. The main part is that Stephen needs to do some time management and make sure he puts enough homework time into completing the assignment before the deadline next week.
Stephen's understanding and usage of some formulas still seems a little shaky, in particular, trickier questions that requires you to rearrange the pythagorean theorem, or using trigonometry to find sides or angles; which he only learned about recently. Hopefully he can also get more practice of these concepts throughout the assignment.

Stephen seems to have a good grasp of the methodology for this subtopic. He was able to consistently use the right calculator inputs to find the answer, and more importantly by the end of the lesson Stephen could look at a question himself, analyse the triangle, figure out what the values mean and answer the questions by himself. His speed and consistency seems quite good given that this is completely new content.
We are still working on helping Stephen check his answers as he goes, making sure that he does not forget to include the units or make small mistakes that could take away random marks. Additionally, Stephen had some trouble breaking down the worded questions that didn't include predrawn diagrams. This is more related to being able to read and comprehend what is being asked from worded questions which is a separate skill that we also need to pay attention to.

Stephen understands the formula well. He knows how to plug numbers in and what types of answers to expect when doing so. In general Stephen seems to do well in the simpler questions, being able to do the repeatable 2 step questions relatively quickly and on his own.
Stephen seems to struggle with questions that breaks out of the basic, look at the numbers -> plug into formula and get answer structure. It may be due to how he was quite tired during this lesson but he can end up forgetting basic fundamental steps to solving the question when he just used that exact step recently. For future lessons, it would be good to spend more time focusing on the harder worded questions making sure that Stephen is to reason his way through these types of question all by himself to develop essential critical thinking skills in the context of this topic. This is particularly important for this type of topic as well since there is only usage of 2 or 3 essential but easy formulas, but being able to understand them at a basic level and apply them in a variety of different context is the much trickier part.

Since this content was covered before, Stephen already had a vague background understanding of what a right angled triangle is and how to use the formula. This helped significantly with the practice questions we covered during the lesson. The lesson overall seemed like an effective reminder for Stephen regarding how to use the formula and and approach different types of questions.
After the algebra test, Stephen did not feel very confident. I feel like a contributor to this was that for this test though he had a good understanding of the content he struggled with remembering the concepts and applying that to the questions in between lessons. I have discussed this with Stephen that for future tests we will try to develop a clearer plan, of what Stephen needs to be able to do and by what point leading in to the test. Hopefully Stephen could also find more practice time outside of tutoring as well as getting into the habit of getting as much information regarding the test as possible, things such as are calculators or notes allowed, will it take a single or double lesson etc... so that we could prepare for it better.
