I grew up in a small rural town between Byron Bay and Lismore, and in 2023 I graduated from Trinity Catholic College Lismore. Highschool was a struggle for me, as it was for many. Rural areas are notorious for limited resources and funding, and my schooling was significantly interrupted as my campus was located in a severe flood zone. My school was completely inundated and we lost everything, having to do part of my senior years online and then being placed temporarily between another schools campus' and the local university. I was living out of home as a 17 year old and struggled deeply in highschool with my learning disability, ADHD. I worked extremely hard in my subjects; Advanced English, Studies of Religion 2, Society and Culture, Legal studies, and Visual Arts. I received Band 6s for all of my internal assignments, and Band 6s in the HSC for Society and Culture and Visual arts. I ranked first for Society and Culture in my cohort, and within the top 15 for each of my other highly competitive subjects, receiving a 89.80 ATAR.
After graduating highschool, I packed my car the week after and drove 760km to move to Cronulla, Sydney where I lived for 4 months. I was filled with an abundance of opportunities, and after deciding to defer my university acceptance for 12 months, I flew to London and reunited with my older brother. I backpacked Europe with 2 of my friends, then with my brother, then by myself for 3 months. This experience was so eye-opening and solo travelling made me discover myself, my confidence, and my passions. When my trip ended, I moved back to my small hometown where I was a primary carer for my mother. I went back to my highschool job and became a manager and head bartender for weddings and functions; managing a full team of employees with disabilities in a hospitality and tourism facility at just 19 years old. I learned how to work and manage people of all walks of lives, ages, abilities and challenges. Some individuals had cognitive disabilities, others had physical, and others had both. I became a role model and respected figure to all of my supported employees. It broke my heart to, but as my gap year came to an end, I said goodbye to my job, employees, friends and family, and made the move back to Sydney to commence my dream course.
I was accepted through early entry midway through Year 12 at Macquarie University for my dream course. I have always had a deep fascination for human behaviour, the human mind, and how and why we do what we do. I had a dream since I was young to be a clinical psychologist and change the lives of children in the way my life was changed. However, my mind changed over my gap year and my studies of Society and Culture, particularly in Criminology. I now study the Bachelor of Psychological Science Majoring in Criminology with the dream of going on to doing my Honours and my Masters in Forensic Psychology. It's a long road ahead of me, but I want to share my love for learning to others.
