An example of an original math's question that I have written is: Measured amounts of oil and water are being added to a pot containing 800 grams of chicken, so it can be cooked and used for burritos feeding a family of four. It is known that the required cook time: • Increases by 20 minutes for every kg of chicken in the pot • Decreases by 2% for every mL of oil added to the pot • Increases by 0.45% for every mL of water added to the pot To get the optimal oil to water ratio (for stirring, texture, and flavour), the volume of water added should equal the volume of oil multiplied by itself, then divided by 10. • How much oil should be used to get the minimum required cook time? Give your answer in mL. • Additionally, what is the minimum required cook time using this amount of oil? Give your answer in minutes. • Considering the effect that the oil volume used has on the required cook time, would it be considered more practical for the cook to precisely measure the volume of oil used, or to simply make a quick estimate?
This question above is a small example of how my three -fold career ties together; I’ve created the kind of question that a high school maths teacher might write for students, but for the purpose of teaching an AI. It could be said from this that I’m teaching mathematics to AI, while teaching it to humans in my education career, while also applying similar knowledge and skills in my engineering design and checking work.
During my time completing a Bachelor’s in Civil and Construction Engineering, my favourite units were the several Structural Analysis units. I enjoyed most of Structural Analysis because I like mathematical problems which I can visualise and draw, then make a process of calculations based on what I've drawn. I find this to be a process which engages a level of creativity, followed by sound structure and logic. I consider this concept more broadly to be a fusion of science and art, logic and creativity, chaos and structure, mind and emotion, sport and art, engineering and architecture, and functionality and beauty (the list goes on). I call this the sequence of structure; a manner and order in which things can be arranged to optimise its output both in aspects of appearance and practical function. I seek to use this concept in how I engage in all my ongoing activities because it enables me to experience and work in a way which I consider to be both fun and beneficial; whether it be determining the reaction forces involved for a beam holding up different weights, or calculating currents in a series or circuits. This way of thinking and engaging increases the levels of enjoyment and satisfaction I receive from some my other interests, including; drawing (structured patterns of lines and colours I have drawn to display a static structure on a page), dancing (the movement of the body as a moving/dynamic structure in space), writing (and reading), setting up or tidying rooms, video games and bodybuilding.
